Many visitors to Taos decide to add Raton to their Taos area itinerary. Raton is on I-25 just South of the border with Colorado. US-64 is a common route to take to Taos and that takes you to Raton. It's certainly worth planning a stop on your way to or fro Taos if that's the route you select. It's also worth planning a day trip if you're going to make several days of your Taos area visit.
Here's a list of ideas and things to see or do while in Raton:
* Raton Museum. Located in a historic 1884 building, just the space is worth the stop. The museum hosts a wide ranging collection of local and area history, art, mining, ranching, railroading, and more. For those HS band folk, the sheet music to the New Mexico March written by John Philip Sousa is on display.
* NRA Whitington Center. World reknown history of guns, shooting range(s), and safety and educational information. A total of 33,000 acres offers a number of different ranges, displays, a visitor facilities.
* Sugarite Canyon State Park. Three lakes adorn this new state park. Summers feature stocked fishing, a visitor center, and historical ruins. Winter months offer ice fishing and cross country skiing.
* Music From Angel Fire holds a concert of two in Raton.
* Hsitoric Shuler Theater. A state landmark and ornately designed performing arts center. Built by Dr. Shuler, the theater opened in 1915. Restoration was facilitated by his daughter, Evlyn Shuler in the 1980's. The lobby is home to 8 WPA murals dating to 1934 by artist Manville Chapman (one of the Taos Founders) depicting scenes of the history of Raton.
* Raton Country Club & Golf Course. Inexpensive and uncrowded golf for all.
Nothing herein suggests staying anywhere other than Taos and Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. Raton is on your way here or back home or it's a couple hour drive from Taos.
