New Mexico Lobo Ski Team Awards Banquet 2010

Congrats to the UNM Lobo Ski Team for their 2-009-2010 performance, both on the snow and in the classroom.  Under coach Fredrik Landstedt's capable leaadership, this years team has achieved perhaps the most overall successes of any UNM Ski Team.  From the team winning the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Title to the individual ski performances of each member, from placing 3rd in the NCAA National Championships, this team is quite accomplished.  It's pretty close to the mens baketball team reaching the final four.

One example is the impressive results of UNM skiers is the US Alpine Skiing National Championships at Lake Placid, NY during this years spring break.  Main Hemmingsson finished 3rd in the giant slalom on Tuesday March 23, 2010.  Olympic silver medalist Julia Mancusco won the giant slalom ahead of Hemmingsson by 0.33 seconds.  From the stories told at this years banquet, sounds to me like we may well be watching more than one future World Cup and / or Olympian medal winner.

The ski team is also known for it's high level of academic performance.  Their average GPA is around 3.7.  Some of this years graduates are over 4.0.  UNM hosts a dinner for athletes with GPAs above 3.2 (as I recall).  Virtually all the UNM Lobo Ski Team is invited to that academic achievement recognition dinner.  The ski team includes electrical and mechancial engineering students, several disciplines at the Andeson School of Management, and several other degree fields.

Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza is proud to be one of many supporters of the UNM Lobo Ski Team.  Along with all the ski resorts in the Taos area, supporting these skilled athletes and their program is essential for the results they are striving to achieve.

Our team at the hotel is also a group of winnering Associates.  With their hard work and efforts, Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza is reaching positive results year to date.  We're selling more rooms to more people and getting good Guest comments.  We are in fact up significantly in sales over 2009.  We really appreciate each team members efforts at serving our Guests!

Thanks for reading.  Thanks for your business.  Let us know how we can better meet your needs.  Send us an email with any questions.  Take advantage of our spring discounts and specials.  Always book direct to save both you and the hotel trouble and money.

Taos Visitor Activities and Services

One of the questions Guests often ask is does Taos have a taxi cab service.  The answer used to be "with much challenge" but is now "yes!".  Taos Shuttle offers 24 hour shuttle service, airport shuttle service to and from Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque, and in town (and area) taxi service.  You can find them at http://www.taosshuttle.com/ or at 575-779-5641.  Welcome to the Taos business community!

One of our great front desk team members offers several recommendations for activities while you visit Taos.  First, for those who'd like to explore by horseback, Taos Indian Horse Ranch offers native Pueblo guided tours.  From novice to intermediate to advanced riders, you'll find this tour to be one that totally communes with the natural features of the Taos area.  Many exemplary Guest comments about this activity.  They are the only such rance located on Pueblo lands.  More info at their web site: http://www.taosindianhorseranch.com/ or call 800-659-3210.

Prefer an aerial visit?  Try Eske's Paradise Balloons.  They've been flying the Rio Grande Gorge since 1991.  Several flight choices are mentioned on their web site: http://www.taosballooning.com/ or call 575-751-6098.  Again, many great Guest comments on their tours at their web site.

Want it wet and wild?  Then a white water trip down the Rio Grande is in order.  One of the popular tour guides is Los Rios River Runners.  One of New Mexico's oldest and most experienced rafting companies, you will enjoy and remember your raft experience with Los Rios.  http://losriosriverrunners.com/ or 800-544-1181.

There's just 3 ideas for extending and expanding your knowledge of the Taos area.  For those who've been reading the blog, they are just a sampler, an appetizer.  Give us a week and we'll keep you exploring and wandering to your hearts content!  2010 is the year Return to Sacred Places... Taos!  For more ideas on the many activities related to this years theme, visit the calendar at http://taossacredplaces.com/calendar.

Some folks have asked why we are offering such low priced specials at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza such as the 3 nights from $99 package.  The answer is simple, we want to attract every person possible.  In today's challenging economic times, we'll share the pain during slower seasons.  We'd like to earn your business and referrals and positive comments.  If your expectations are more along the lines of the Ritz, let us know that when you call and we'll guide you to that service provider.  If you budget is more limited, we have Taos most convenient location, exceptionally clean and confortable rooms, "tour guide" like Guest service, and Taos' most reasonable lodging rates.

Easter Pilgrimage to Santuario de Chimayo April 2 - 4, 2010

Santuario Chimayo is considered by many to be the little church of miracles.  Thousands of people from near and far walk, crawl, ride, and drive this Easter Pilgrimage to Santurario de Chimayo during holy week.  Some bear wooden crosses or other burdensin search of miracles of healing from the church and it's well known red dirt.  Some are returning to leave behind their crutches, braces, and prayers of thanks.

What a beautiful ending to a glorious winter ski season and beginning of a fresh spring and summer.  Regardless of why you've planned a visit to the Taos area, I suggest you include a visit to this cultural and historic site. Here's a link to an information filled website: http://chimayo.us/.  For more details on the Santuario, click thru to that page of the site.

Our special rates for late ski season and early spring are enabling folks to spend a little extra time in and around the Taos area.  Let our front desk team know you have questions.  They'll be your tour guide for exploring the North Central NM Sangre de Christos.  No one offers a better value in Taos area hotel lodging.  With value rooms from $99 for 3 nights, we're almost as low as a hostel but far more comfortable!  You can choose to upgrade to a deluxe single king bed room for $129 for those 3 nights.  That's $43 a night which is almost ridiculously low!  Only availabgle by calling Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza at 800-444-2346 or 575-758-4293.  You can view our web site at http://www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn

Taos Area Snow Report Summary 03/27/10

This spring is totally amazing.  We've been able to brag about snow at least a couple times a week.  Here we go again.

Angel Fire shows to most snow last 24 hours with 8".
Sipapu gained the least with this storm reporting only 3 to 4".
Taos Ski Valley reports 6" since yesterday's report.

All of those reports say very clearly, spring skiing is better than great.  Fresh snow during spring is a welcome blessing.  If you can figure out how to get a couple days off, the season is winding down and you'd better get here soon!

Guests are calling and walking in because of our extreme late season specials.  General tourist traffic is beginning to show life again after the long cool winter.  Need some quiet relaxation, this is a great time to get back in touch with yourself.  Return to Spiritual Places.  Get to Taos, NOW!

Here I Go Again. Justice Failed Michael Behenna!

There's a lot of lip service to justice by today's pols and media.  Unfortunately, many of them are attorneys and are the harbingers of terrible justice.  Michael Behenna was a 1st Lt. Army Ranger in Iraq.  He was forced to kill Ali Mansur, an Al Quida insurgent in self defense.  He was tried and convicted of murdering Mansur.  But, the prosecution failed and refused to provide the defense with exculpatory evidence (required to be shared when available).  I encourage you to review the web site: http://defendmichael.wordpress.com/.  Watch the video interview with his Mom (please ignor the interviewer, Mike Savage, if he somehow offends you).  It moved me to donate for his defense.

Hope I don't offend anyone with this plea.  I was told earlier by someone that my posts weren't always welcome and he would not do business with me.  Guess everyone can't be intellectually honest.  Critical thinking is a needed skill in a republic like USA.

We'd love your business and referrals of family, friends, and business customers.  We're certainly not perfect but we'll do all we can to provide you with great Guest service from our best location in Taos and at a very reasonable cost.

Taos Area Summary Snow Report 03/25/10

Looks like this storm has past and another one on the way for the weekend!  This has been simply an amazing spring for fresh snow all around the Enchanted Circle.

Angel Fire claims 4" last 24 hours with a 9" total from storm
Taos reports 3" and a total of 10" last 3 days
Sipapu gained only a trace plus the 3" yesterday

Seems I stirred up a hornets nest with one acquaintance on Facebook.  He wants to argue about my link to the Sharpton statement about Obama and Socialism.  If you missed the video, here it is: http://talkabouttaostourism.blogspot.com/2010/03/believe-it-of-not-al-sharpton-on-obama.html

Learned yesterday the Los Rios River Rafting is already scheduling trips on the Rio Grande.  Fortunately, they supply wet suits (I' may prefer a dry suit at this time).  Ask at our front desk for details and numbers to book your trip from now until the river transforms into a dust bowl (late summer).

It's also a good time to bring your mountain bike for some of our low area rides.  At the 7,000 foot level, the snow is almost all gone already.  Yeh spring!

Hope we see you soon.  Late season super special rates apply to all direct bookings.  I don't think you'll find better prices than by calling us direct.  Value rooms from $39 single, family rooms from $49, and deluxe kings from $59.  Great location, Awesome service, Best sleep in Taos, and Affordable.  That's Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.

Taos Area Snow Report Summary 03/24/10

Holy Spring, another fresh snow day in the Taos area.  Not as generous as we'd hoped but we'll take all the snow we can get.

Angel Fire reports 5" fresh since yesterday
Taos posts 7" new snow in 24 hours
Sipapu shows 5" with $25 lift tickets (that has to be the deal of the year!)

Since it is spring skiing, Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza also posts super saver rates.  We'll do singles fro $40 a night.  We'll do 3 night packages for as low as $99.  I've said it here before, those are unheard of ski area lodging rates.  They are the best deal in Taos, PERIOD!.  Possibly at any ski area anywhere.

As we work our way into spring, perhaps you'll want to make your Memorial Day weekend reservations.  Maybe it's time to think about Taos Solar Music Fest weekend.  Other peak dates will be 4th of July weekend, Taos Pueblo Pow Wow, and the annual Taos party, Fiesta!  Rates are always higher for those dates.  Our downtown location is always a sought after place to lay your head!

Hope you'll return to our blog often to see what's going on in Taos.  Let us know any questions or missing topics.  We love referrals of family and friends.  Check us out on Twitter if that's easier for you to access.  Follow us, comment.

Believe It Or Not - Al Sharpton on Obama

Pardon the non Taos lodging and activity comment but found the statement hard to believe when I heard it on yesterday's news shows.  Some of you may not like Fox News or O'Reilly (but this is a video clip of Sharpton), I didn't like the need to watch an ad, but the video clip of Sharpton is stunning.  Didn't listen to anything after the Sharpton clip so can't comment on that.

http://video.foxnews.com/v/4119639/sharptons-socialism-shocker

Hope you'll add Taos to your travel plans this year.  Great snow for spring skiing now, a full river for white water rafting starting in April, great shops and museums for summer visits, numerous area golf courses for the golf finatics, smoke free Taos Mountain Casino for evening entertainment, many Spiritual Activities planned for the entire year in and around Taos for this years Return to Sacred Places program.  Top that with Taos best lodging values at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza and you're set for several days or a week in Taos.  Ask about our long term rates, we'll help you stay for as long as you'll desire!

We always invite you to share our blog, this video, and always appreciate referrals to the hotel.  Thanks!

Jewelry Art School Courses in Taos

That's rather a fitting artistic pursuit.  A jewelry design and creation seminar in Taos, home to much Southwest jewelry.  As you plan your summer activities for 2010, perhaps now is the right time to either start a new field of endeavor, enhance the skill set you already possess, or organize a day or two as a sampler of your creativity.

Here's a link to an awesome local artist who's been ofering semiars for several years: http://taosjewelryschool.com/  You'll find photos of their work, a calendar of courses, and tuition details.  Whether you're attending for just a day or a week, we'd invite you to consider Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza as your home away from home.

To facilitate your decision, we'll offer specials to anyone attending a Taos Jewelry School course.  Most courses are Monday thru Friday.  For anyone reserving at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza who mentions this blog post or their attendance at the School, we'll offer our commercial, goverment discount of $55 a night for a single.  That results in a 5 night cost of $275.  The only periods excluded from that offer are peak weekend periods: National 3 Day weekend holidays, Taos Music Festival, Taos Fiesta weekend, Christmas - New Years, and those times when another group has contracted the hotel.  That's only about 15 to 20 dates per year.

Educational 10 minute American Government video

Not often I send you off to something unrelated to doing business with me in Taos.  Usually some sort of connection.  Here's a well done short video link that tells quite a story that many of us forget, some may not know, and all should watch.  As IBM used to say, THINK!

http://wimp.com/thegovernment/

At the same time I ask you to view, I also thank you for the business this spring break.  The town and Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza have been busy all week.  Looks like it may continue thru next week as other areas enjoy their spring break.  Another snow storm forecast for the weekend.  Warm days and cold nights mean the snow is lasting pretty well.  Spring skiing at it's best!

Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza rates range from $89 for a single.  Our family double queen rooms are filling first.  If we're full on that side, we'll try to work with you for two rooms with a king bed each at a bit of a discount (depending upon how busy we are).

Again, apologies to those guests who experienced hot water shortages earlier this week.  We've had the plumber out 3 days in a row, we've emergencied parts from Albuquerque to Taos to repair, and the problem seems to intermitantly return.  Thanks to Daniel for checking and manually switching the boiler when necessary throughout the night.  We will find and repair ASAP (both for you and Daniel). :-)

I personally thank each Guest and reader who visits TCA and the other area artistic and creative groups. The creative organizations in Taos are struggling just like all the rest of middle America. Your purchases of a ticket, your telling and bringing your friends, and your cash contributions are all needed and appreciated.

I'll go out on a limb here. Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza will encourage you to attend one of TCAs presentations. Then we'll reward you...we'll make it almost free...bring your ticket stub in to the front desk...we'll discount your room by the cost of 1 entry ticket. I hope we fill both the showings at TCA and our rooms. This offer makes our super affordable rooms even more reasonable!

Come on, get to Taos, the skiing is tremendous, the shops are inviting, the galleries have great art, you need the time off. Visit us soon, plan and extra couple days. We'll keep you wandering and enjoying. Promise!

Weaving Southwest moves to Spacious New Mocation

Folks who've been coming to Taos for many years may remember Weaving Southwest's new location as the old J. C. Penny store, just North of the Plaza light on Paseo del Pueblo Norte. Owned by Teresa Loveless, she expressed excitement about the new locations size, lighting, access, and location.

The new store is essentially a gallery of fiber weaved art, a retail outlet for weaving tools and materials, tapestry, and wearable apparel. Their new web site has just about every piece available in the store and is set up for online purchases. A web browse is almost like a trip to Taos, well nothing can replace being here.

They plan a couple special events each year and will have a special theme around the fall Wool Festival, usually the first full weekend of October. Their web site is: http://www.weavingsouthwest.com/ or you can reach them at 575-758-0433.

Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza is located just a couple blocks South of their new location. Such easy access will be appreciated by both their customers seeking lodging and our Guests seeking fiber arts and crafts. You will enjoy their new space and displays. Make some extra time for viewing and visiting on your upcoming trip to Taos.

Taos Area Snow Report 03/08/10

What an awesome way to do an eraly Spring Break! Fresh snow all around!
Angel Fire reports 8" fresh powder for skiers and boarders.
Sipapu shows 9" for carving turns.
Taos Ski Valley gained another 10" from last nights storm.

Weather forecast reports suggest more on the way. The Taos area has more snow that most mid Colorado resorts. The I-70 corridor is often missed by this years el nino pattern (it's been the other way around many years).

I talked to a friend who checked around some of the I-70 resorts for lodging. Our rates at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza seem ridiculously low after what he learned about Colorado hotel rates. The lowest he was quoted was in the mid $150's for a week night! We're about half that at under $80 for a single.

Private Charter San Antonio to Taos for Spring Break

Forbes Life Magazine suggests a private jet charter is a more affordable means of traveling to Taos than NetJets or Flight Options. It is also hugely quicker to use one of those options rather than commercial.

The estimated cost is only $2,709 for the charter compared to over $9,000 for the two services. You can bring 7 friends for the same cost. A charter also delivers you to Taos in about 1/3rd of the flight time. The article does say the cost estimate is for same day return so your ski trip will be short.

Just seemed like a fun thought. If you decide to visit Taos for Break, make Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza your headquarters. Prime location for the family or group that includes non skiers. We're located right in the heart of downtown.

Working Class Theatre, New Mexico

March 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 2010, 8PM TCA is "Dead Man's Cell Phone". It's a play by Sarah Ruhl. Smart and edgy. Great way to finish your day skiing or riding the resorts around Taos. Even a good activity to bring you to Taos.

Those are Spring Breeak weekends so hotel rates are higher than normal but always the most affordable in downtown Taos is Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. Ours start at $89 for a single, add $9 for each added Guest. By far the most reasonable in downtown Taos.

Need a Little Motivation?

The Taos Winterlife winter healthy lifestyle guide has an amazing article about a fellow who became paralyzed after a workout in 2007. Doctors had trouble diagnosing the nature of his disability and told him he'd neve walk again. Sudden improvements a week later lead to the meds changing their effort from diagnosis to rehabilitation. January 5, 2010, Frank skied at Sipapu. Great article: http://taosnews.com/articles/2010/02/26/news/doc4b83fd20c0eda638036223.txt

We all get busy and forget to be thankful for what we have. Inspirational stories such as Franks are available to keep us humble, push us a bit, and offer us added motivation to be better, do more, achieve positive results.

Guess everyone should plan an extra ski trip to the Taos area. Make Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza your home away from home while you experience a spiritual revival at one or all of our Taos area ski resorts. The mountains are simply unreal during these cold winter months. The trees and vistas are beyond spectacular. Each run or ride is an exhilarating breath taking trip down new trails.

Don't forget to bring your sunscreen. A high is about to give us bright sunshine and warm days. Spring Break is around the corner. We're offering special low rates to Guests who book direct. Rates from $49 for a value single to $69 for a deluxe single king with fireplace. Those values are almost unheard of in ski areas during ski season.

Taos Area New Snow Report 03/01/10

The Taos area is enjoying El Nino to the max. This is a great year to hit the slopes an extra few days. Here's today's report:
Angel Fire top of the list again with 9" fresh powder.
Sipapu has just under 6" today.
Taos Ski Valley again has 6" light fluffy champagne powder.

Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza offers Taos best lodging values. Prior to Spring Break's arrival, we'll do our value rooms for as little as $49 for a single. No hotel at any US ski area offers a better value. The least expensive lodging at one of the big I-70 Colordo resorts starts at well over $100 a night. The typical at that resort is well over $200. You can stay with us in the heart of downtown Taos 4 nights for the price of 1 at many big resorts. Choose our single king bed deluxe room with gas log heater - fireplace for as little as $69 a night.

We always include complimentary continental breakfast (includes yogurt and hard boiled eggs), WIFI, free parking (some I-70 resorts charge $12 yo $25 a night extra), and great front desk "tour guide" like service. Had one Guest email me recently and brag about how helpful and freindly our front desk person was. Told me she was perhaps the best he'd ever dealt with. That's what you can expect when you choose Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza for your Taos area hotel accommodations. We're the independent you can rely upon.
