Cumbres Still Chuggin and Fire BAN in Place

Some of you may have heard about a fire on a trestle on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR.  Happened about a week ago.  Cause unknown.  Although it will take about a month to repair, the train continues to operate from Antonito to Cumbres pass and back.  Each half of the line's runs offers widely varied vistas so you'll still get to enjoy this steam powered narrow guage rolling history museum.  http://www.cumbrestoltec.com/  888-286-2737  Tell them Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza referred you!

For those planning to camp around Taos, the forest service has fire restrictions in place.  Here's their source document - http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/carson/news/2010/06_23_10_cnf_stage1_fire_restrictions.shtm.  Please use good judgement when enjoying the awesome forests around Taos!

If you're one who's enjoyed our firepit / BBQ, it is closed due to the Town deeming open fires hazardous.  http://www.taosnews.com/articles/2010/06/29/news/doc4c212a244b4ec608472544.txt.  You can still enjoy the beautiful sunsets with a glass of your favorite beverage purchased across the street at Smith's around our central park courtyard.

Just a couple of interesting ideas.

First, although out of season, I am proud to know that one of the fastest skiers in the world resides and works right here in little old Taos.  Ross Anderson is the Marketing Manager at Taos Mountain Casino.  He also lays claim to a number of world speed skiing accomplishments.  His definition of cruising is a bit higher than mine.  I brag to folks about averaging 45 on the longest run at one area.  Ross defines fast as well over 150 MPH!  Check out his site - http://www.rossanderson.org/profile.htm.  Here's another with some great photos - http://www.usaspeedskiers.com/ross.htm..

Just saw a note about another activity for the weekend of the 4th.  Angel Fire is hosting a car show with perhaps over 100 vehicles arriving for the 3rd & 4th.  The event includes a poker run, microbrew and wine sampling, 50's dance music, exhibits, vendors, and more.  Most activities take place at the new Angel Fire Country Club.  There will also be an Enchantged Circle Cruise.  All benefits from the Cruise go to the David Westfall Veterans Memorial Foundation now the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial Park in Angel Fire.

Hope you'll stay with us at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza when you visit the area.  We look forward to serving your lodging needs in downtown Taos.  Possibly the most convenient hotel location in Taos.  Great free parking, huge courtyard for relaxation, solar heated pool (now in the 80's).  Multi night discount rates are amongst the most reasonable anywhere in Taos.  Guest service is "tour guide" like.  Let us know the things you'd like to see and do and we will fill your days with as much sstuff as you'll find time for.

Bring your bike along for cruising the local trails.  A very good modest trail runs along the West Rim of the Rio Grande Gorge from the bridge Southward.  Prefer a guided experience, just ask at Los Rios River Runners and booking office right here at the hotel.  http://www.losriosriverrunners.com/.

Aerial Flight Tours of Taos and Angel Fire Now Available

As an enthusiast of small planes, I am excited to let readers know of a new offering for Taos.  Cactus Aviation is now conducting flight tours of the Taos area.  Flights are in a Cessna 182.  That's a high wing craft which offers all passengers awesome views.  Here's their website:  http://www.cactus-aviation.com/

Solar Music Fest is this coming weekend.  We have a few rooms for Friday night only.  We've called around and virtually everyone is full.  If you want to make the trip up, we'll gladly call up to the ski valley and try to assist you in finding accommodations.  Picture posts invited and welcome.

Fourth of July is about to arrive.  Due to extreme fire hazards in the mountains around the Taos area, many, if not all, campgrounds are either closed or operating with a complete fire ban.  In other words, book your room soon.  Taos will likely fill that weekend too.  The Town of Taos is still planning to offer their fireworks display.

The 3rd weekend out is Taos Pueblo Pow Wow.  If you've never experienced such an event, if you do you will be impressed.  It a mounts to a dance competition amongst many different native American indian tribes.  Complete with incredible constumes, you'll see entire families perform from very young children to equally senior citizens.  They also have native food vendors and other native items for sale at the event.  The Pow Wow is held on Taos Pueblo grounds just a couple miles North of Taos and the pueblo.  Bring a big camera memory stick!

White water rafting is still available in the Rio Grande and a couple other rivers nearby.  Los Rios River Runners has a booking office at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  We invite you to visit their website - http://www.losriosriverrunners.com/  .  Fun you will have!  As usual, we'd love you to post your memories on either picture or video sites.  Let us know the link soe we can send others to view.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR is also huffing and puffing up and over Cumbres pass.  It's a rolling museum from the late 1800's.  It is something that you really should do while here.  My strong suggestion is to make your trip on trip #3.  That's drive to Antonito from Taos, bus to Chama, train return to Antonito, then back to Taos for the evening.  I invite you to share your picture or video and mention us or link to our site.  Send me the link information and we'll forward folks to view your pics.

We invite you to make Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza your home away from home while in the Taos area.  We implore you to plan your visit for more than just a nmight or two.  Just let us be your "tour guide".

Our best value during the summer is Pay 3 nights, the 4th night is free.  No other discounts or coupons apply.  We very much appreciate your business and hope we earn the right to your referrals and return.

Happy Father's Day Weekend to Dads Everywhere!

Lot's of families spending the weekend in Taos.  The river is still providing some pretyy exciting white water for the rafters and kayakers.  Fishing varies around the area.

For an awesome vista during dinner for Father's Day, Stakeout Restaurant  is about as good as it gets.  If possible, we recommend arriving about 30 minutes before sunset.  If it's to be a great sunset as often happends in Taos, Stakeout offers one of Taos' most spectacular views of that daily event.  Their Facebook page includes menue, wine lists, etc.  http://www.facebook.com/StakeoutRestaurant.  Enjoy!

Another choice right in the heart of downtown is Graham's Grill.  They're now doing breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Their claim: "Great prices. Friendly service. A hip, fun place".  They'll even customize any of their offerings to your specific tastes.  http://www.grahamstaos.com/dining/restaurant.php  Cheers!

Our third featured restaurant for this post is Byzantium.  They are only about 2 blocks North of Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza at 112 Camino de la Placitas.  This for that date that you want a small intimate
made from scratch open kitchen dining experience.  Achieving 3 diamonds by AAA you'll enjoy and delight at your meal at Byzantium.  Menu at their photo tab at facebook - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Taos-NM/Byzantium/238768118530.

Taos offers visitors so many fine dining opportunities, this short post does NOT do them justice.  Spend a few days with us.  We'll find things to keep you entertained, enjoying, learning, experirncing, and well satisfied.  Want to make it even more special?  Order flowers from Enchanted Florist right here at the Inn.  Visit Smith's across the street for any of your liqour needs.  Spend the evening out under our grandma willow tree.  Solar heated pool is mid 80's and crystal clear.

We really appreciate your visiting our blog/twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn pages.  Hope you'll come back again.  Thanks for following us on any or all of those sites.  Hope you can visit soon and for more than just a night.

Wild West Adventure on Cumbres & Toltec, Plan to Visit NOW!

I've mentioned Cumbres & Toltec before.  As a reminder, it's our areas steam powered narrow guage train.  We're talking about a 125 year old rolling museum.  It is a MUST do activity for the entire family from 5 years up.

Although I believe the full trip from Chama to Antonito is the best trip and the one I recommend most often, on the 4th Saturday of the month, Cumbres is doing The Wild West Trains.  Departing at 11 AM from Chama on June 26, July 31, and August 28, 2010, you'll enjoy a scenic ride up to Cumbres Pass, lunch at the pass, and a return to Chama.  Be prepared for a little excitement as you never know what's going to happen in the Wild West.  Expect the unexpected.  Expect an action packed train robbery.

All aboard!!!

Solar Heated Pool is Green, Environmentally, Not Algae Wise

One of our little steps towards environmental friendliness is our swimming pool heating system.  The pool people, New Mexico Pools, were put to the test when they tried to convince me that solar was adequate.  I'd tried that two times before about 15 or 20 years back.  Technology hadn't arrived at the point of success back then.  Never-the-less, I was convinced.  We, somewhat worriedly, went with 100% solar = NO gas fired heater.  That's the part I'm talking about being "green".  Water is clear as a bell!

Now mind you, with today's natural gas rates, it would likely cost $700, maybe $1,000 a month to heat the pool with nat gas.  Pool was 84 degrees today, all solar heat.  Unless we have many cloudy days in a row, that is the typical temperature thru the end of August.  September, it starts to decline a little.

Today, we had at least a dozen people in and out of the pool by 5 PM.  Lots of laughing, splashing, relaxing, and swimming.  Air temp was in the mid to upper 80's today in Taos.  Scattered overcast part of the day, even sprinkled for about 5 minutes.

Another environmental effort we made this year was to reduce our use of chemical fertilizers and perhaps get by with a little less water for our huge, acre plus grassed central park and courtyard.  We ordered a couple loads of composted sterilized mushrooms.  Unbelievable!  Greener than ever before with the first watering.  Most thin areas filled in rapidly.  Had the same experience at home with a much smaller area of grass.  More work for me I might add.  Thanks to our trusty maintenance team for spreading about 15 cu yards of the mushrooms.  The grass looks absolutely great!

Plan your visit to Taos soon.  You'll love relaxing in our grassy and treed courtyard.  It is one of the best in Taos!  Your family will be impressed that you chose a hotel with such a well done and warm, cozy pool.

Mention our Facebook special and that you"like" us for the best value inn Taos: a 3 night package special of $159 single ($53 a night) and $59 nightly. Harwood Museum is a Blue Star Museum

The Harwood has a number of Exhibitions this summer around the theme "Return to Sacred Places".  Of note is a lnadmark piece "Winter Funeral" by Victor Higgins along with other work by the original eight artists of the Taos art community.

Another exhibition includes Taos Pueblo Photographs.  The Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has provided many photos over the years.  This collection has been accumulated over twenty years and includes a number of rare and old works.

Gene Kloss From Berkley to Taos is an exhibit of Ms. Kloss' life long print making endeavors.  The largest body of work was created in  Taos after 1970.

"Sacred Navajo Sandpaintings: Rendered in Wool" is the fourth exhibit.  Capturing the sand painting images in wool rugs is a spectacular show.

Harwood joins over 700 museums in all 50 states in participating in the Blue Star Museum program.  The program offers free admission to all active military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Viet Nam Veterans Memorial State Park upcoming activities

Imagine yourself at 8,000 feet above sea level.  Picture yourself located in a large mountain valley.  What if there were virtually no "city" lights to dull out the satrs?

That's what you get June 12, 2010 at 8:30 PM at the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial State Park.  Pray for clear skies.  Bring WARM clothing.  Brin your binoculars or telescope.  View the night sky through their telescope.  Learn how to find constellations and planets.

Again, bring wqarm cloths.  Dim your car lights as you approach the visitor center.

The VVM State Park is also offering guided tours and range talks on Saturdays and Sundays June through August.  Saturdays at 11 AM and 2 PM, Sundays at 11 AM.

For more details call them at 575-377-2293.

The Park is on the Enchanted Circle about 25 miles East of Taos on US 64.  Frankly, it's hard to do all there is to see and do on the 100 mile Enchanted Circle in a day.  No, it is NOT possible to do it all in a single day.  That's why you need to plan your vacation this year for at least several days in Taos.  Give us the chance and we'll send you home marveling at the sights and experiences and history and culture and art of the entire Taos area.  That's North Central NM, Taos is the headquarters for your stay.

Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza is your home away from home.  Great downtown Taos location, clean and confortable quality rooms, above and beyond service qualaity, all at reasonable prices.  Check out and follow and like our Facebook, Twitter, blog pages.  Mention you've done all that and we'll offer you our 3 night special package for $159 for a single.  Note, that's $53 a night.  Or a 1 night stay for $59 single.  You'll not likely find such values at any other Taos lodging.  Maybe out in the middle of nowhere.  Maybe at a hostel.  We're building this internet social networking buzz.  Hope you'll help us out by doing the above and passing the idea out to your family and friends.

Why Stay At Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza?

Talked to a fellow car race enthusiast yesterday at Sandia Motor Speedway during the SouthWest MotorSport sports car road race who visits Taos for business.  Said he stayed at a well known brand at the far South end of town.  Complained about it being so far away from the center of activities.  That is one of the most important reasons to select Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  We are located just 2 blocks South of historic Taos Plaza.  It is easy to get to all the historic district downtown shops, galleries, events, and entertainment.  It's the old RE rule - location, location, location.

Had another couple stay Friday evening who I've known for many years  The thought our front desk team was exceptionally friendly and helpful.  We will greet you warmly, we will be as professional as possible AND as friendly as you'd like us to be.  So many hotels seem to forget the human part of hospitality.  We've selected and coached our front desk team to really help you find things to do to help you enhance the pleasure of your visit to the Taos area.  We are you "tour guide".

Something I haven't talked about for some time is our comfortable beds.  Since the largest part of your time spent at the hotel revolves around sleeping, we've topped all our beds with 2 inches of memory foam.  It's the tempurpedic kind of mattress foam.  The best support one can buy for bedding.  We've covered that with plush mattress pads to let the air flow and keep you a bit cooler.  Then we triple sheet all the beds.  Our intent is to imporve your quality of sleep.  When you do stay in a hotel away from home, a good nights rest is what you want.

Remember, there are a ton of things to see and do in and around Taos.  If you'll plan several days, we will help you plan your activities and self guided drive tours.  We'll keep you going from Cimarron and Raton on the East to Antonito and Great Sand Dunes on the North, to Los Alamos and Ghost Ranch and Chama on the West to Santa Fe and Las Vegas on the South.  That covers several days of things to do, places to see.  You will go home relaxed and expanded with new knowledge of Northern NM.

As always, I ask you to visit and "like" our Facebook biz page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Taos-NM/Indian-Hills-Inn-Taos-Plaza/92952104085?v=app_2347471856.  Tell your family and friends about us.  We live for referrals!

Geocaching is a growing popular family activity that may involve hiking, walking, awesome vistas, and all the other exciting activities that the Taos area is known for.  You'll find them along the roads with minimal excertion required.  Some with multiple caches and hiking or mountain biking along trails.  Others in residential or business areas.  Some in downtown Taos.

We'll offer our online and special rate packages to those who tell us they've geocached or are doing so.  That's a 3 night package rate of $159 singel and a one night package of $59 single.  Those are very affordable rates for Taos.  Please mention us on your forum and blog posts at geocache.com and elsewhere.  Hope you'll "like" our Facebook biz page - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Taos-NM/Indian-Hills-Inn-Taos-Plaza/92952104085?v=app_2347471856.
