Fresh Powder Covers Taos Area Resorts

Most important information of the day is a storm is upon us!
Taos reports 8" last 24 hours
Sipapu reports 6+" since Wednesday
Angel Fire reports 2"
Town of Taos has about 2"

Snow is expected for much of Thursday for North Central Mountains.  This fresh snow means skiing is finally improving and generally good at all area resorts.  The shortage of good snow means the crowds are less than most Christmas holidays.  In other words, load your gear, call and reserve your room, ski you in Taos!

As a reminder, Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza is a Town of Taos Lodging Partner with Sipapu.  Beginning Sunday night January 2, 2011 for skiing on Monday January 3, 2011, when you buy your lift ticket for Sipapu from Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza ($39 adult), you get free lodging.  Double occupancy offer.  Singles require a two night stay.  Friday, Saturday, and peak weekend Sundays require a $20 surcharge on the room.  You will not find a better value.  Period!

Frustrated with your skiing ability?  Tired of being a terminal beginner or intermediate?  Really want to improve?  Taos Ski Week is the RX for a cure!  Program starts every Sunday and goes thru the following  Friday.  Includes a 2 hour lesson every morning.  Normal price of $250 for the week has been slashed by 60% to $99 for all January start dates - 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th.  We'll provide your lodging for $249 single and $274 double.  If you yearn to ski better, thiat program is THE ANSWER.

There are still a few days of the holiday to join us in Taos.  Our rooms are lower than any of the last 5 years.  Mention this post and we'll do rooms from $99 single (that's $30 off our rack rates).  That's for direct bookings!

Quite an amazing season.  Hope you were able to fully enjoy and experience the Christmas Day celebrations with family and/or friends.

Winter so far in Taos has ben mostly in the high 40's and low 50's temp wise.  If you visit to ski, hike, or bike, bring sunscreen!  If you're here to wander the historic and cultural places, layer your clothing.  Nights are chilly but days have been very nice!  We are low on snow but the skiers have been reporting mucho fun anyway.  Looks like another storm later this week.  May I ask, pray for snow, dance for snow, do whatever it takes to encourage a major dump!

Adventure Ski Shops has a satellite store open at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  They are offering hotel Guests discounted rental packages with $5 off most of their rentals.  Applies to sport skis and up and all snowboards.  http://www.adventureskishops.com/  800-433-1321  Thanks Moises!

California Flood Storm Drops Some Fresh Snow

Guess we shouldn't complain about the minimal fresh snow left by the CA flood maker.  Angel Fire reports 7" of much needed fresh snow.  Sipapu welcomes the 2" as does Taos.  Most areas have saved some runs for openning over the holidays so skiing is happening now around Northern NM.

You can always get the best rates we offer by calling direct to Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  Mention our Sipapu Special for rates as low as $80 single.  That is the lowest rate we offer during this Christmas week.

Don't forget that many local Taos merchants are offering a sales tax free holiday thru January 1, 2011.  That means a savings of at least 8% off everything in participating stores.

Ask when you call for dining recommendations.  We've heard from a number of satisfied Guests about great food offerings at several of our often referred restaurants.  One family really enjoyed Songs, a recent asian food provider.  Another was very happy with the food and service at Grahams Grill.  If you are nervous about spicey foods, ask for the chile on the side so you can flavor to taste.

Merry Christmas to all our friends, customers, and Guests.  Hope your holiday season is the best ever.  And success wishes for the New Year!  Ski you soon!

Skiing at Sipapu Graded A+

We skied at Sipapu yesterday.  Talked to half a dozen Guests.  Every one was very impressed with the snow, the people, the value, the entire experience.  Many of those we talked to had already skied either Angel Fire, Taos, or Red River.  Every one of them thought their day at Sipapu was the best of the bunch.

Virtually all the people we talked with thought Sipapu was by far the best value they'd seen on this ski trip.  People were staying at Angel Fire and Taos.  All thought it was worth the drive over to Sipapu!

Everyone liked the family friendly attitude.  A couple commented about how there was no arogance shown towards beginner or poor skiers.  Reasonably priced equipment rentals and food were also appreciated.  No crowds was also a liked feature.  Peak days will certainly be more crowded but every ski area around will suffer from that circumstance.

Snow, although could always use more, was pretty darn good.  They've done a good job of making and grooming.  By mid afternoon, quite spring like, especially at the base of the area.  Temp in the high 30's most of the day.

Son's family with a 6 and 8 year old first timers were in our care.  The kids took first timer lessons and both managted to make one run top to bottom.  Required lot's of Dad's help but got it done.  Congrats to Shelby and Brandee!

We are now open for offering the Taos lodging partner program with Sipapu.  When you buy your lift from Indian Hills Inn for Sipapu, you'll get free lodging!  $39 for a lift ticket includes a room.  Double occupancy required on weekends and peak days.  Two nights required for singles during the week.  Not available 12/26 thru 1/1.  Full details at the Sipapu website specials page or by calling Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  We want your business so will try as hard as we can to work with you and your family.

One more ski observation.  If you can organize a several day ski trip, plan at least 4 days for skiing.  If you are the most common skier type, you make a 2 day ski weekend.  If you are frustrated by your ski improvement, you are very typical.  Skiing for at least 4 days, add a couple of lessons, will alomost guarantee improvement.  In addition to taking a lesson or two during those 4+ days, stop once in a while as you progress down the mountain and watch whichever skier you think looks best.  If you come across a ski lesson, follow along for part of your run.  Listen, watch, practice.  What are they doing?  What is their stance?  How do the use their poles?  Which way do they lean?  How do they use the ski edges?  Then try to replicate how they are skiing.  You do that for at least 4 days and you will transform your ski ability.

Another storm is approaching NM.  Let's hope it delivers at least another foot or two!  (I'm an optimist!)

Ski you soon at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  We still have rooms available for the Christmas holidays.

Dreamin of A Whte Christmas - Snow's On The Way!

Writing the blog from Taos this AM.  Cooler and very cludy.  News shows snow showers all over North half of NM.  Forecast is for 6" or more in the Northern NM Mountains and ski resorts.  Pray for MORE!!!  The season has been very dry so far so this storm is important for all area ski resorts.

TCA offers The Met Live in HD over the next 5 months.  They are offering about half a dozen shows beamed by satellite to TCA.  Go to http://www.tcataos.org/ for details of what and when.  Most of us won't get to NY to see these awesome shows.  Just another great reason to add Taos to your travel plans in 2011.  Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza supports the arts and will discount our room rate by 50% of the cost of 1 ticket for The Met Live in HD from TCA.

It's even less likely most of us will travel to London for their theater activities.  But, you can visit Taos and see National Theater of London shows such as Hamlet, Fela, King Lear, Frankenstein, or the Cherry Orchard all at TCA.  Again, http://www.tcataos.org/ for details and dates.  Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza wants you to make Taos a regular stop on your entertainment schedule.  We'll offer half of one ticket price off your overnight lodging.

March 31 and April 1, 2011, Marlo Guthrie will be doing a concert at Taos Community Auditorium with the Burns Sisters.  Goes almost without saying, we'll offer Guests the same fantastic discount offer.  See you soon for one of the above entertainment opportunities.

Again, not that we've done over 250 blog posts over the last year or so.  If you like what you see, stop back often.  We're always seeking new activities and up to date reports on what's going on in and around Taos.  Hope you'll "follow" the blog, "like" our Facebook page, connect with me on Facebook, tell your family and friends about our specials.

Taos Center for the Arts brings Taos programs such as the Metropolitan Opera Live, National Theater of London Live, Movies at TCA, Chamber Music, and MANY more.  TCA depends upon the generous support of locals and visitors both attending and buying tickets AND making generous year end donations.  Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza appreciates our friends support of this fine Taos area organization.  As many of you know, we discount Guests lodging by half the cost of one ticket per room.  We also donate rooms for both working teams and entertainment groups visiting TCA.  If all our viewers donate even a small amount of $25 (or more), you will make a significant difference in the 2011 program strength.

New Carpet Being Installed at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza

First, one of our most common complaints is about to be fixed.  In spite of vacuuming, spotting, and shampooing, as carpet ages, it's appearance works towards looking unclean and old.  Might be clean as a whistle but perception is what the Guest sees.

SW Renovations is removing and installing new carpet for us this week.  Everyone around the hotel is excited about the changes.  The front desk team are looking forward to Guests who'll be more comfortable wandering around in their bare feet.  We will start replacing draperies for the next mini project.  We were able to get only 9 rolls which means there amy be a couple rooms left undone.  Those will be a little less costly and were selected because they were the cleanest and least aged.

The phone problem I mentioned earlier this week is fixed via a new front desk console.  Actually took two of them to finish the job.  First one from CMP apparently hadn't been adequately tested as the micro phone end of the handset didn't work properly.

The other good news item relates to one of our tenants in the adjacent retail rental building.  Adventure Sports is the winter half of space A.  Los Rios River Rafting is the summer half.  Adventure is open a few hours each day for ski rentals and other ski goods.  They are offering Guests at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza $5 OFF all of their adult ski and board packages.  If you rent a package of skis, boots, poles for $25, it'll be $20.  Just tell them you're a Guest at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza and away you go!

Another area of special is we are partnering with Sipapu Resort again this year.  Buy your lift ticket for Sipapu from us for $39 + tax and your lodging is free with some limits.  Two night stays required for some.  Double occupancy required for sokme periods.  Not available Chirstmas week.  All the details will be finished by tommorrow, Friday, December 3, 2010.  BTW, that is the one of if not the LOWEST lift ticket in the USA.  Free lodging is unbelievable!  That too is the best value in the USA for skiers.

TCA's Holiday Concert is this Saturday, December 4, 2010, 7 PM at TCA and features Robert Mirabal.  Robert is a two time Grammy winning musician.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the TCA office 575-758-2052.  As is our custom, we'll discount your already ridiculously low room rate if you go to the concert.  Bring 1 concert ticket to the desk and we'll credit 50% or $10 towards your room charges.  No other specials or coupons apply.

Hope this finds our readers, Guests, and potential customers all enjoying the ramp up to the Hanukkah and  Christmas holidays.  We continue to offer special lodging rates thru December 16, 2010.  From then to December 25, 2010, rates at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza will remain amongst the best in Taos.  December 26, 2010 our Holiday rates commence thru January 1, 2011.  Then the special January rates commence.  In general, the earlier you make your reservation, the more likely you'll get the lowest rate available for that date.  As we approach a specific date and get a little busier, rates usually escalate.  Walk in rates depend very much on how bsuy we or any other hotel is.  For the second half of December, I suggest you book ASAP.

For anyone wandering by, hope you'll follow the blog.  If you're more of a Facebooker or Twitter person, all of these blog posts are sent to both those sites.  Our LinkedIn page also displays these comments.  We'd reall appreciate your "like"ing our FB biz page - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Taos-NM/Indian-Hills-Inn-Taos-Plaza/92952104085?ref=sgm .  As always, we LOVE referrals - Guests, FB friends, local business connections, etc.!  What can we do to work together?

TCA Movies & More

First, it's been a while since posting to the blog.  Seems the HD in the laptop decided to depart this time as we know it.  Hopefully, I'm back in business again.

TCA is showing the movie Get Low featuring several well known and liked actors.  Shows Monday & Tuesday, October 18 & 19, 2010 at 7:30 PM at TCA.  If you're visiting Taos, this is a good way to enjoy the evening.  Tickets are $7.50 and the box office opens about 6:45 PM prior to the show.  http://www.tcataos.org/

Must brag a bit about Five Star Burgers as being called "the best burger in New Mexico" by Great American Bites and USA Today.  They are featured as in the "51 Great Burger Joints across the USA".  Not bad for little ole Taos.  BTW, they also have a restaurant in Albuquerque.  http://www.5starburgers.com/

We'll start our fall specials Sunday thru Thursday thru October.  Pay 2 nights at regular rate from around $69 single, we'll give you a 3rd Night FREE!  That gets the rate about $46.  We'll still include the friendly front desk service, the complimentary continental breakfast, full cable TV with HBO, Taos' best beds, and free WIFI.  That special is for direct bookings only.  800-444-2346  No other specials apply.

Last weekend of October is Taos Mountain Balloon Rally.  They are doing 3 days including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting October 29, 2010 thru the 31st.  This is the 28th annual event.  Plan to enjoy 35-50 balloons.  This is a more intimate experience than the International Balloon Festival in Albuquerque.
http://www.taosballoonrally.com/

BTW, the mountain colors are quite brilliant.  Hiking and biking are still excellent ways to relax in and around Taos and the Enchanted Circle.

We'd love your business and referrals at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  Conveniently located 2 blocks South of the historic Taos Plaza.  Come enjoy our hospitality!  800-444-2346.  www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn

Some of the Hotel Details we miss but you may need!

Had a call earlier today from a Guest who needed to know about our WIFI.  First, we have it via Qwest DSL.  Works most of the time but there are days.  Different from the big city hotels, ours is free, not an added $10-15 per day.  How do they get away with that...high rooms rates...parking fees...WIFI fees?  Our basic rates are usually amongst the most reasonable in Taos plus we thro in the free WIFI, parking, continental breakfast.

Another party asked about the various online booking systems and agencies.  You know, the ones who advertise on TV all the time.  Famous actors and such.  Let me tell you bluntly, if you get a quote of $65 from one of those sites, call us direct, we will almost always be able to match that number.  If we happen to be busy with rates a bit higher, we'll still try to meet any website you get rates from for us.  We'll often be able to match other property quotes.  It certainly makes it easier if you even have a copy to give us when you check in but we'll probably let that slip too.  The real benefit for booking direct is accuracy and easy changes or cancellations.  We'll cover all the details when you book (unless the numbers change), we'll always allow a 24 hour cancellation (unless you bought a super discounted non refundable prepaid rate direct from us), we don't charge any wee-wee fees (it's rate plus tax) like some of those online people do.  Remember, there is NO FREE LUNCH.  They buy a block of rooms from us, mark the rate up, add some service (wee-wee) fees, and sell it to you at something higher and with more restrictions than you calling us direct.  BTW, that advice applies to every hotel you stay with, anywhere in the world.  Do your research online, check out all the sites, then go to the hotel site directly and/or call the hotel direct.  That also means try to get around the central reservations number.  Direct means call the front desk or property front desk/reservations person.

Our single king deluxe rooms offer a small gas log heater/fireplace.  Pretty romantic on a cold fall/winter night.  The heater is a thermostatically controlled "wall heater" that has a glass front with manufactured logs.  They are more efficient than a real fireplace and vastly cleaner for air quality.  Hope you enjoy them.

Why do we triple sheet our beds?  First, it looks much cleaner and neater than a pilled blanket.  Second, it keeps the blankets cleaner.  Third, we just think it is a more professional way of offering the room.

Our solar heated swimming pool is still open but will be closed soon.  The sun is keeping it in the 70's but that will decline shortly.  We usually close it around late September or early October.

Continental breakfast is a bit varied but usually includes bagels, toast, juice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate (seasonal), yogurt, hard boiled egg, oat meal (seasonal).  We also try to have little gift bags with an assortment of give aways.  Nothing fancy but always a little extra.  We also offer single cup coffee in the rooms.

We currently offer an full lineup of cable TV chanels including HBO movies and specials.  Our TVs are all 25 and 27" models with remotes (as long as the remotes don't gro legs).

Our office is open from 7 AM until 10 PM daily, year round.  Late reservation arrivals use the night bell to rouse the night person.  Our phone system allows Guests to call out 24 hours and to receive calls by instructing your family to call the hotel, then follow the instructions you've given them to ring your room.  The phones also include voice mail and wake up / alarm clock features.

We also hope you'll join us by following the blog, tracking us on Twitter.com/indianhillsinn, and follow us on Facebook.  I also invite you to share us with your family and friends.  As a small independent business, we live for referrals.  Earning those referrals is our franchise.  Thanks for both the returning Guests and the referrals of business and social network connections.

Here's More Taos to See and Do

Saturday, October 2, 2010, Taos Kiwanis Magic Show.  Held at Taos High gym.  This is a wonderful event that benefits kids in and around the Taos area.  We've been aiding their effort for many years and it is always a worth while event and effort.

The word is out.  It's not just me bragging about the fall color tours around Taos.  Taos is named among Travel and Lesiure online’s “America's Best Fall Color Drives” - http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/americas-best-fall-color-drives/10

Part of the magic of the fall colors is a ride on Cumbres & Toltec.  Cumbres Pass is at 10,000 feet so the colors change a bit earlier up there.  Cumbres and highway 17 are always worth the side trip.  www.cumbrestoltec.com/.  Tell them Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza sent you!

I've mentioned this before but did you know that the Taos area is home to over 30 water falls?  Amazing that the high desert is home to some amazing water features.  Most are hard to get to so are relatively unseen.  Here's a link to our local expert's web site with a state wide data base.  www.dougscottart.com/hobbies/waterfalls.htm

There are still Return to Sacred Places, Taos 2010 activities and events going on.  http://www.taossacredplaces.com/

If you want more information on Taos area activities and want to invest a little extra time, wander back thru our year ago posts.  I likely am talking about somewaht different activities this year than in prior times.  Most will probably be as good or better than before.

And don't forget to ask our front desk team.  They've all been with us for 1 to 2 years.  They are quite accomplished at being your "tour guide".  Let them know your interestes and they'll likely steer you in a direction that you'll appreciate.

Take a picture of your crew in front of our SW carved totem poles, around our pool area, in the courtyard, or on one of your area adventures.  Post to your Facebook page and let us know.  We'll brag about you too.  Anyone take a video of your ski, raft, bike, fly, fish, hunt, hike trip this year?  Send us the link if you'd like to share.

Enjoy fall in Taos!  It's a spectacular time in NM's Northern Mountains.

Angel Fire is an ACTIVE part of the Taos area and the Enchanted Circle.

The too have activities scheduled many weekends.  Plus there are numerous other Circle sights and places to enjoy while in and around Taos.  As the mountain colors begin their annual golden show, the Circle and Angel Fire are good choices for more vistas.  Eagle Nest lake and the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial State Park are must sees when you visit the area.

Here's the link to the Angel Fire promotion page - http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=d9kqn7cab&v=001VK-ta8v4JpW1W03trItnCuk2Ubf2dd4ysHYZ2Y3sclq34W5132KwN4d5v6yOTgsNgTCb2lZBvBNF5nNa2h8ob3-_6SJJXMLBRQSIXu0zl4zmNsA_xoSg_w%3D%3D

Along with the Taos Fall Art Festival, you'll find that Indian Hills Inn always offers some of the best values, best Guest service, awesome convenient location, and clean comfort in the area.  Our team of Associates is proud of the number of referrals and repeat Guests who've decided to visit us and Taos again this last few months.

Our Taos Fall Art Festival Special is 3 nights for $159 for a single and $174 for two Guests.  That's about a 25% discount from normal single night rates.  I promise, we will keep you busy enjoying the area for those 3 nights...easily!  Fact is, you may prefer a couple of added nights to cover the area better.

Hope you'll consider "liking" our Facebook biz page, following us on Twitter, following this blog site.  I also invite you to become a friend on my Facebook page but I am rather political this year...be forewarned :-)  Our prime marketing effort for 2010 is Facebook.  We are enscounced in seeking and earning referrals from both Taos area folks, New Mexico friends, and Guests from around the world.

We're just 2 blocks South of historic Taos Plaza, a block South of McD's, and across from Smith's Grocery and Gas (best gas prices around Taos).  You can also buy your spouse a bouquet at Enchanted Florist, relax in a Yoga class at Santosha Yoga, and book a raft trip at Los Rios River Runners, all right here at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.

Remember, this week was Constitution Day.  Reading it is rather instructive.  Might even make you questions some of our governments decisions.
