Part of the attraction of the Taos area is Taos Pueblo. The cultural and historic nature of Taos Pueblo is closely intertwined with the Mesa Verde peoples. Around the time the people of Mesa Verde departed that area, a number of other native peoples started their history. One of those tribes is Taos Pueblo. Here's a site from the Mesa Verde site describing those connections: http://www.nps.gov/meve/historyculture/upload/meve_associated_tribes.pdf .

The numerous Taos area museums offer much insight into the native american history and cultures.
