Fall Colors Suggest a Trip to Northern NM This Weekend

Here are some specific spots for enjoying the fall color tour of the Taos area. Bring your camera, bring your folding chairs, bring your hiking boots/shoes. Just returned from a short Taos visit (I live in Albuquerque most of the time and at the Inn the rest).

One of the things that never ceses to amaze me is the varied sunsets provided by the Taos area. Tonight would have been a great night to be at StakeOut for dinner about 6 PM. The sun was partially blocked by a cloud with sun rays bursting forth around that cloud. Cloud edges were brilliant white. Where was my camera?

I've posted this on a couple of websites but not ours or the blog. Several years back a large, 40 feet each side, block of the Sangre de Christo Mountains dislodged from it's perch several hundred feet above the Rio Grande valley about milepost 26 on NM 68. If you know 68, it's just a few hundred feet South of the ancient no longer safe nor used suspension bridge. That boulder now sits on the Northerly side of the Rio Grande.

It crashed across the road, left a huge dent in 68, fortunately missing all traffic and humans. Not so lucky was the bus driver a few years prior to that who encounted a 10 foot cube of granite by hitting it with his bus.

The colors around Pilar are interesting in that the Pilar valley widens some and has many aspen and golden colors leaves. Plus for a few miles prior to Pilar, the reds and oranges of some ground level plants are quite exquisite. Pilar has a BLM visitor center with rest rooms, information, and picnic tables. Imagine relaxing while listening to the soothing sounds of the water as it flows downstream.

Surprisingly, there are still people rafting the Rio Grande. Although not as exciting as in June with peak run off water flows, a day on the river is hard to beat. Call one of the Taos boating companies or stop by Rio Grande Rapid Transit in Pilar.

A short ditance further North about milepost 32 to 33 is the horseshoe. Again, that valley offers awesome color vistas of gold, red, rust, orange, etc. If you're up to a hike, you can work your way up that valley to a high point that offers great views of the Rio Grande Gorge to the North.

As a reminder, this weekend is Wool Fest which attracts a good crowd to Taos. It'll offer you more to see and do. Rooms become a bit harder to find but we still have availability at Indian Hills Inn. www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn or 800-444-2346. Please share our blog with your friends. They will appreciate your reminding them of the beauty of Northern NM during the fall.

Taos Wool Festival

Every fall for many years, Taos Wool Festival conducts classes relating to everything fiber for the two weeks surrounding their Arts & Crafts Festival Show at Kit Carson Park. Those classes have begun. Here's their website - http://www.taoswoolfestival.org/ or call Liesel Orend at 575-753-9744 for furterh details.

The 26th Annual Taos Wool Festival weekend is this coming weekend, October 3 & 4, 2009. It's well worth spending the weekend wandering Kit Carson park and leaning more about crafting fiber products.

You'll of course also get to enjoy experiencing the mountians around Taos. Colors are really starting to show fall. Might even see a bit of termination dust on the peaks.

The galleries of Taos and surrounding areas continue to have great displays of artistic creations in all the possible media. The trails are available to hikers and mountian bike enthusiasts. The foods of Taos area restaurants will invite you to return time and again.

We at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza always have our welcome mat out to both past Guests and first timers. Enchanted Circle & Eagle Nest Lake Visitor Center

I've probably talked about the Enchanted Circle before but it is one of the reasons people visit Taos. If the 100 mile route isn't in your plans, stay a day longer and take the drive! Taos North towards Questa, maybe a stop at Millicent Rogers museum, maybe a visit to the Rio Grande Bridge, add a side trip to Wild & Scenic Rivers.

Then off the Red River. There's always things to see and do in Red River. From Questa, drive East and you can't miss Red River. Coming up, October 2-4, 2009, is the Days of 1895, a celebration of Red Rivers gold mining history. Their 5th Annual Octoberfest is October 9-11, 2009. Get more details at http://www.redrivernewmexico.com/ or phone the Chamber at 575-754-2366.

Continue your driver to Eagle Nest. On the way, a stop at Elizabethtown might be in order. It a historical town but now a ghost town. Newest feature of Eagles Nest is the State Park Visitors Center. One of the first visitor centers anywhere to be zero net energy, it generates as much power as it uses through solar photovoltaic panels and a vertical wind turbine. Plus it's very well built with extra insulation, natural lighting design, and passive solar. The building features interpretive exhibits, a classroom, administrative offices, and a pavillion looking out at Wheel Peak (New Mexico's highest, 13,166).

The Viet Nam Veterans Memorial is at Angel Fire and an absolute MUST see on your trip around the Enchanted Circle. Dry eyes are usually not found at this historical, honoring, and educational center.

Angel Fire Resort just finished a $20 million golf club plus numerous other village improvements. Summer and winter, you'lll find much to see and do.

Thinking of doing Taos in a day? Honestly can't be done. Do your self a favor and book a few nights at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. We're your "tour guides" for North Central NM. The above ideas are just a few thoughts to expand your Taos Experience. Visit us at www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn or call 800-444-2346 for more ideas.

San Geronimo Feast Day at Taos Pueblo

Bringing September to a close will be San Geronimo Feast Day. San Geronimo is an annual ritual day for the Taos Pueblo People. The celebration begins with a Catholic Mass in the San Geronimo church on the pueblo plaza on September 29. September 30 is the traditional foot race conducted at dawn followed by a day of arts and crafts fair with a number of food vendors.

Since the day is known as a feast day, invited friends and family of pueblo residents are welcomed to private homes to sit down to a Pueblo feast of red and green chile, fry bread, horno baked bread, corn, and other traditional dishes.

Around 4 PM, clowns gather around a tall pole in the pueblo plaza center topped with a variety of harvest foods and goods. Those clowns then try to climb the pole. The first to the top then lowers the goods to his brothers below.

Please remember, Feast Day is a part of the native religious custom. As such, photography and recordings are prohibited. Your respect of their traditions is appreciated. Violators risk having cameras confiscated. Park in designated areas only, please do not block drive ways, unauthorized parking will result in towing of vehicle. Visit http://www.taospueblo.com/ or call 575-758-1028 for details.

Taos Chamber Music Group begins it's 17th season with a fall concert at the Harwood Museum the 26th & 27th of September. http://www.taoschambermusicgroup.com/ for more information.

BTW, we invite you to register and post your comments on our blog. You are as always invited to visit Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. Let us be your downtown home away from home while you explore Northern NM. www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn 800-444-2346

Drivers Alert - Be Aware!

Much travel to Taos starts in Albuquerque. Driving North on I-25 to Santa Fe is the most common direction to Taos. Watch your speed, especially during rush hours. The state announced today that they are out in force with their laser guns on over passes, airplanes in the sky, and unmarked vehicles. They are looking at speeders, aggressive drivers, signal free lane changes, etc..

The next segment of the drive to Taos is from Santa Fe to Espanola along US 285. Be very carefull all the time while on Pueblo land. The pueblo police make a living off unsuspecting travelers. Pojoque pueblo is very aggressive in speed control. If they don't take it away in the casino, they'll get you on the highway.

An inexpensive radar/laser detector is cheap insurance. I think I gave about $50 for mine and it has earned it's keep many times over. In any event drive safely!

Stop and see us at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. Lots going on in Taos thru October. Fall arts & crafts fair this weekend. Taos Wool Fest first weekend in October. Fall colors of the aspen trees is becoming more briliant every day. Forecast is for snow on the mountain tops this week. The cold temps will increase the color changes.

I'll try an experiement with this blog. A printed copy of this post is a discount coupon. Good thru the end of October, we'll discount our rate to $55.55 for singles Sunday thru Thursday and $65.55 Friday & Saturday. No other specials apply. Not valid with existing reservations. Must present coupon at check in.

Call today to book your Taos vacation! 800-444-2346 or www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn .

If any of you viewers enjoy reading our activity and tourism blog, post a comment, share your interest with others, forward our website or blogsite. Reserve your room today - 800-444-2346. Stop by the website at www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn.

Did I mention termination dust. It's been so cloudy I haven't seen it yet but others tell me there is termination dust (snow) on the higher peaks of Northern NM. Ski you in Taos!

Cumbres & Fall Colors & Muder Mystery?

If you love fall colors, if you enjoy trains, if you look forward to great entertainment, Cumbres & Toltec is your venue! Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza has been a long time supporter of Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR. Cumbres is a steam powered, 1880's rolling museum that travels from Chama to Antonito crossing the NM - Colorado border nmumberous times. Cumbres is the 10,000 foot mountian pass the train climbs to from each end.

For those who enjoy fall colors, love to photo great scenery, Cumbres offers awesome vistas of trees beginning their journey from summer greens to fall colors. As you wind your way up the tracks, you'll be amazed at the great Kodak moments around every bend of the twisty narrow guage train.

If you want a murder mystery experience on board, Cumbres offers that dinner theater play trip October 2, 2009. Here's the details. http://campaign.constantcontact.com/render?v=001VYL78RL2HxfhHQsCU26Z2cXaPwp-PhXwkGL1wQEKFdZxSZdJ38vjJpzfOwIAXdtGSKqfa0m13rzbAaLXfZzC_t28DmvJrsBJJijLt1btCu9jL7TD1NHvSLNmMsjPdWaPaedWwzyngFs%3D

If you choose the day time trip, my suggestion is to stay with us in Taos (of course). Organize your tickets the day before to make certain they have space available. Arise early, drive to Antonito, pick up your tickets, and enjoy the day!

IMPORTANT! In my opinion, you want to take the trip that busses you to Chama first and returns to Antonito by train. I believe it's trip 3. Why? First, it's easier to drive to Antonito early in the AM than to Chama. Second, you want to take the train out of Chama because that grade is the steepest climb on the train and the engine really has it's work on that chug up the Cumbers pass.

Book your nights at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. You'll find us well located in downtown Taos about 2 blocks South of historic Taos Plaza. Guests are appreciating our memory foam mattress toppers, plush mattress pads, triple sheeting, and SW design comfortors. Our front desk team offers great Guest service almost like "tour guides". All of that and the most reasonable downtown rates in Taos. 800-444-2346 or visit www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn . Enjoy fall in the area around Taos!

Taos Pueblo's Mesa Verde Connection

Part of the attraction of the Taos area is Taos Pueblo. The cultural and historic nature of Taos Pueblo is closely intertwined with the Mesa Verde peoples. Around the time the people of Mesa Verde departed that area, a number of other native peoples started their history. One of those tribes is Taos Pueblo. Here's a site from the Mesa Verde site describing those connections: http://www.nps.gov/meve/historyculture/upload/meve_associated_tribes.pdf .

Many folks visiting Mesa Verde either are or would be well served by spending time exploring Taos Pueblo and the Taos area along with the other 8 Northern New Mexico Pueblos (also decendants of Mesa Verde indians. The numerous Taos area museums offer much insight into the native american history and cultures.

For more indormation on Taos Pueblo, go to their website: http://www.taospueblo.com/ . As with most pueblos, it is always best to check with the Pueblo office for further information on their open hours and dates. They all carefully manage their culture and may be closed at varying times during the year.

Here's a link to a page on the Eight Northern NM Pueblos with links to each pueblos page. http://www.espanolaonline.com/pueblos.htm . Santa Clara recently improved their cliff dwelling information presentation. It's worth another day in Taos to explore that pueblo's Santa Clara Puye Cliff Dwellings.

Make Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza your headquarters for exploring North Central New Mexico. You'll find us conveniently located in downtown Taos and providing some of Taos' best lodging values along with exceptional Guest service. Give us an extra day or two (or more) to really dig into the history, culture, art, and outdoors of the Taos area. 800-444-2346 for reservations. Website for links to more North Central NM sites: www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn . Thanks for your support of this fiercely independent small business.

Taos Long Known for the Art Scene

As most well know, Taos is a long time art community. The Fall Arts & Crafts season is upon us. You'll find numerous gallery and museum shows year round with fall being a particularly good time to enjoy the varied art offerings.

One of the interesting current displays at UNM's Harwood Museum includes photographs and art of E. I. Couse, one of the founders of the Taos art colony. Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza abuts the Couse meadow, at 19 acres, the largest tract of yet undeveloped land in downtown Taos.

Another interesting show goes on in our lobby. Sam Del Russi paints astronomical / space art. Very interesting stuff. I'll dig up an old blog post and add it to this one shortly. Sam's pieces are priced reasonably in the $250 to $500 range. All are for sale at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. He's had a good summer as we've sold about 30 pieces!

Call or email questions about the art shows in and around the Taos area. Google Taos art / gallery and you'll find more information than I could possibly talk about here.

Come see us at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. You'll start to relax as you enter our comfortable lobby with high beamed ceilings, expansive windows with mountain views. Most Guests appreciate our acre sized central courtyard's contribution to their further relaxing. Some sit around grandma willow (100 feet tall, 25 feet around the trunk), sip a toddie, maybe even light a fire in the fioreplace. Just ask for ideas of what to do, where to go, which restaurant to choose, etc.. We're your "tour guide". www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn. 1-800-444-2346.

Fishing Around in Taos

I'm copying posts from our former blog to enhance the data and information here. Thanks for reading. Tell your friends about the blog and the Inn!

There is pretty good fishing within 15 minutes of Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. There are several fishing guides and shops within a few blocks of the hotel. They are the best place to gain ideas of what fish are where and how to acquire them. The Taos News usually has a fishing report in the paper for more ideas of what and where.

The Rio Grande box above the confluence of the Red and Rio Grande offers especially good fall trout. Part of the quality waters of the Wild and Scenic River area, the hike down and the wander along the Rio Grande is also worth doing just by itself. From there to Pilar on NM 68 offers relatively easy fishing varying with flows and weather. The Red River near the hatchery is another choice. A visit to the hatchery might be an added benefit.

The Cimarron River just East of Eagle Nest is only about 40 miles from Taos and offers majestic scenery. You can include a visit to Philmont Scout Ranch on that wander plus the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial.

Eagle Nest Lake offers lake fishing. From a boat is usually better than bank efforts.

Abiquiu lake is about 100 miles from Taos. Leave the wife at Ojo Caliente for a day of spa relaxation whilst you hit the waters. Chama River flows into Abiquiu.

Sipapu Resort straddles a small river and that entire river offers fishing activities. Sipapu has a fishing contests occaisionally.

Here’s a link to another site that provides a few more details: http://www.anglerguide.com/newmexico/fishingtaos.html . There are other sites the have more data than is appropriate here.

We are centrally located in downtown Taos. A great convenient spot to hang your hat for the evenings, close to foods, entertainment, shops, more. Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza is the name, affordable accomodations is the game! www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn or 800-444-2346. Happy hippy days!

Taos 2009 Fall Festivals

Taos during the fall offers visitors MANY interesting sights, sounds, activities, and experiences. You'll find somethjing exciting just about every week from now until Thanksgiving (and beyond). Here are a few highlights. There are loads of other things to do and sights to see.

Probably one of the best guides is published by Taos News. The 2009 version is not online at this moment but we hope it will soon be available. Here's a link to their guide area - http://taosnews.com/taos_area_guides/.

This Saturday is the Enchanted Circle Century Bicycle race. It's a wild 90 to 100 mile trip around the Enchanted Circle. Riders climb over 3 passes over 9,000 feet. Best historic time is around 4 1/2 hours. Starts in Red River. We've got a group from Denver visiting and staying with us for the fun. Drive carefully and be aware of the riders around you. Thanks!

Sunday offers another bicycle event, Top of the World Bike Race, at Enchanted Forest XC Ski & Snowshoe area, just East of Red River. Information: http://www.redrivernewmex.com/MtnBikeREG.htm.

Starting this weekend, art enthusiasts can venture North for the Rio Costilla Studio Tour. Costilla is abobut 45 miles North of Taos on NM 522. While there, drive up to the old Ski Rio, drive Eastward up the Rio Costilla valley. The views are spectacular, the art will be exquisite. More info at http://www.riocostillastudiotour.org/.

As you return to Taos, a side trip out to the Wild & Scenic Rivers part of the Rio Grande Gorge is in order. Turn West just North of Questa. We suggest at least walking out to the high mesa point above the confluence of the Red River and Rio Grande. If you're luck enough to be there at sunset (about 7:15 PM) you just might be awestruck! If you're there early enough to do a bit of hiking, there are 6 improved trails into the gorge and along the waters edge. Remember to take layered clothing and water!

The best part of your weekend visit to Taos will be your stay at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. Call toll free 1-800-444-2346 for reservations today! Visit www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn for more information. This independent small business appreciates your business!

Do You Take Time To Absorb Sunsets?

Many folks are running, doing, going so fast that they may forget to enjoy some of the beauties of life. Sunsets are one of my favorites that I may have missed when too busy.

In Taos, there are loads of spots to get incredible vistas of everything from mountains to gorges to sunrises to sunsets. I have three favorite places for the sunset end of things.

First, from the lobby of Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza, you can be blown away by the sunset view out the front of the lobby. The numerous firey hues and shapes of colorful skies and clouds can be quite majestic. An amazing view from the middle of downtown. Last fall, we had several couples out in the grassy courtyard watching the scene unfold at susnset.

Second, is a short hiking trail at the mouth of the canyon that US 64 emerges from the East into Taos valley. Desedero Loop trail (sp) gets you up to the top of the first ridge East of the foothills. From there, you can see from almost Los Alamos to far above Tres Piedras. A great place to take a 30 minute hike, bring a bottle of wine and some cheese and crackers, your favorite partner and enjoy!

Third, we have one couple who visits Taos on their aniversary, stays with us, and dines at Stakeout. The views from Stakeout are awesome any time but especially at sunset and preferably when the sunset is spectacular. The food is as good as you’ll find, the drinks are delicious, and the sunsets are indescribable.

Don’t forget to enjoy what the world offers. Don’t miss it!

And book early as July is usually one of Taos’ busier months. As an example, many hotels are already full for the weekend of the 10th & 11th.
Book direct with us or the hotel of your choice. Saves us both $$$. Book online at www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn . We are your best choice for Taos lodging! 800-444-2346. Thanks for your business and referrals!

Taos September 11/12/13, 2009 Activities

Another busy week in Taos! Generally speaking, the fall colors are beginning their annual color filled show. Who knows exactly which date they will be best but the metamorphous is beginning. Come experience the crescendo of colors over the next 3 or 4 weeks in Taos Ski Valley, around the Enchanted Circle, awesome from Cumbres & Toltec scenic RR.

There is one spot high over our courtyard in the foothills just South of the US 64 canyon entry that will become quite spectacular. Visible from as far south as the northerly edge of the horseshoe on NM 68 to North of the turnoff to Taos Ski Valley, it is a sight that always amazes me.

For the bicycle enthusiasts, The Enchanted Circle Century Tour. That's a 100 mile ride over 3 - 9,000 foot passes. Did I mention the need for stamina? http://redriver.org/events/view/84 Ask at our front desk for more moderate rides in the Taos vicinity.

In Taos Ski Valley, the highlight will be a nature experience on Sunday the 13th. http://taosskivalley.com/events_and_calendars/calendar_of_events/ for more details.

You'll also find music at the Michael Hearne Barn Dance. WOW! http://www.bigbarndance.com/
Galleries and shops around downtown and historic Taos Plaza are also offering numerous activities and specials throughout September. All easily accessed from Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza's convenient location. Call us for lodging availability toll free 800-444-2346 or visit our website www.newmex.com/indianhillsinn .

Weekdays or weekends, plan an extra day or two for the Taos area. We'll be your tour guide and keep you busy and having fun! We've had folks stay for a week or more and kept them wandering and experiencing all of North central NM. See you soon in Taos!
