TCA Screens North Face = Another Reason to Visit Taos

This film looks intersting to say the least.  Based  on a true story, North Face is an adventure film about climbing the dangerous rock face of the Eiger, the North Face of that Swiss peak.  You'll experience beauty, desperation, cold, plus history, Nazi, and competition.  Filmed in Gernamy, Austria, and Switzerland.  Foreign languages with English sub titles.

Shows at TCA Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2 PM and again Monday and Tuesday, May 3 & 4, 2010 at 7:30 PM.  Tell you what!  We'll offer our FREE movie special.  Bring your North Face ticket stubs from TCA by the front desk.  We'll credit ONE ticket cost against your room charges.  No one, repeat, NO ONE in Taos offers you almost unheard of affordable rates AND then goes one better with crediting a free movie!

Reminicing About Fred's Place

Any readers remember Fred's Place.  Very unusual restaurant just a couple blocks South of Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  The complex at Shadows has now replaced Fred's Place.

Since one of my tasks this year is to expand our social network reach, I try to invest a little time most days towards that objective.  Today, I found a reference to Fred's Plaze.  Turns out to be a reminicing place for fans of Fred's.

As I commented there, that we still have people who call or check in talking about Fred's Place is a testament to the impact Fred's had on people.  How many places you ate at 10 years ago do you remember...that haven't been there for many years?

Just had to post a link - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=21803689627&v=info#!/group.php?gid=21803689627&v=wall.

In any event, we at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza invite you to follow us on our Facebook biz page and join us as a fan - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Taos-NM/Indian-Hills-Inn-Taos-Plaza/92952104085?v=app_2347471856.

We ask you to join us here on the blog as a follower and invite you to post your comments.

That all goes with seeking and appreciating your referrals of friends, family, customers, and business associates.  If you are a Taos area reader who is involved with a business and want us to follow your posts let me know.  We are building quite a list of marketing partners.  It is already having a positive impact on our referrals and results.

SOMOS Book Sale May 1, 2010 Noon to 3 PM

As some of you may know, SOMOS is one of our tenants at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  SOMOS is a community support organization for the literary arts in the Taos area.  They area resource center and provide readings, workshops, conferences, festivals aimed at accomplished writers and novice writers from throughout Northern NM.

SOMOS is a non profit membership organization.  They receive support from New Mexico Arts, A Division of the department of Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, Mag Dimond, The Virginnia Wellington Cabot Foundation, The Peter and Madeleiene Martin Foundation for the Arts, Healy Foundation, Taos County Lodgers Taxes, and people such as you and I.  As you can imagine, economic times such as we are experiencing today also challenge organizations such as SOMOS.  If you're up to the challenge, write them a check today!  We've supported to organization for several years that they've been tenants by reducing their rent by at least 50%.

One avenue they pursue for fund raising is a used book sale.  This time it's this Saturday, May 1, 2010 from noon to 3 PM.  They're in the bulding immediately North of Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza lobby, next to Santosha Yoga, Enchanted Florist, and across the street from Smith's Grocery and Gas.  You might want to look into joining one of the yoga classes for health and relaxation while here.  What better time to get or order flowers or a gift for Mom's Day next weekend.

Be genrous with your purchases, your book donations, and your check book!  SOMOS does a lot for writers around Northern NM.  They both need and appreciate every dollar you are able to help with.

US 64 Closed between Cimarron and Eagle Nest

Highway 64 is closed temporarily between Cimarron and Eagles Nest is closed due to a fire as of Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 5 PM.  You can get up to date information at the NMDOT hotline - 800-432-4269 or their web site - http://www.nmroads.com/ .  They advise seeking an alterantive route.  If coming from the North East, take 160 West of I-25.  If coming from the South East, come up from either Wagon Mound, Watrous (very windy road), or Las Vegas.

US 64 is a great way to travel across the Northern part of NM.  Lots of interesting places to explore.  Many things to do along the way.  Our advice is to take your time and check out those little places of interest.  Get an extra memory card for that digital camera.  You'll likely find many photo moments, maybe even some animals.  A number of state parks and national forests along the way.  Many trails into the hills for a little off road excursion.  Tha Sangre de Christo Range is spectacular!  Enjoy the vistas.

Very high winds forecast which may well lead to other closures around the state.  If you smoke, please use your ash tray rather than the road side.  If you camp, make absolute certain that camp fire is 100% out.  Cold out!

Smokey and the team at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza thank you!

Hello Spring Growing Season in our Courtyard

Just discussing our central courtyard with one of our Guest Service Team members.  The serenity of that courtyard is one of our unique selling positions.  It's about an acre in size, includes our solar heated (seasonal) swimming pool, is covered with a good growth of grass, includes several 100 foot tall spruce evergreen trees, has a number of picnic tables and chairs, even has a "horno" fireplace / BBQ grill area, and is home to our own grandma willow.  The willow is 25 feet around at the base and at least 100 feet tall.  Spring brings out the fresh buds, new growth, beginnings of flowers, etc.

That courtyard is partially why that particular GSA joined Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  She claims she's rented a good number of rooms to folks who were simply attracted to the area once they discovered the courtyard.  My comment has always been that I'll sell you a room once I get you in the lobby looking out upon that awesome relaxing confortable courtyard.  We've had other hoteliers stop by for tours and express amazement at the fact we have such a peaceful setting right in the heart of downtown Taos.

Part of our talk today related to a local lady who is about the get married.  She'd heard about the vourtyard and may well rent it to celebrate that day of bliss this summer.  In other words, the courtyard is available for those who need space for a ton of people.  Catering can be arranged with outside vendors.  Added services such as tents, tables, chairs, dance floor, etc. can be organized with vendors.  Rooms can be added to your package.  We'd love to work with you to meet your small meeting needs.

If you're in Taos, stop by and take a look at one of the most relaxing spots in the downtown area.  We'll even offer you a room inspection.  It's our 50 cent tour!

Partially why we brag about the Alley is that our artist in residence, Sam Del Russi, works some at the Alley as their kitchen chief/manager.  Sam's the artist who does the galactic scenes hung around the lobby at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  Here's their site - http://www.alleycantina.com/

Mini Civil Disobedience For Fun

Some one at the Chamber networking meeting last night said I should post this little bit of civil disobedience on the blog.  Nothing illegal.  Maybe a little "get even".

First, I am 100% supportive of small business.  The smaller the better.  Been a small businessman for 40 years.  Used to be supportive of almost all business.  BUT, as the larger businesses have grown to massive almost government size, their abuses of the general citizenry have grown too.  It's the "too big to fail" syndrome.  When businesses reach such a huge size, I like them about as much as I do the government.

Second, I've grown very tired of the multiple solicitations the sometimes arrive more than once a week offering you the new great credit card.  If their CC is such a good offer, then I'd have found it and gained it already.

Here's the plan for mini civil disobedience.  When I get one of those CC offers with a postage paid envelope, I always send it back.  First, I write NO on the application signature.  Don't want to mislead them.  Then I rummage thru my trash can for as much other paper as I can stuff into their PP envelope.  I even put a couple pieces of sheet metal in once to add to the weight.  Most I've done was about 4 ounces.  Costs them at least a buck to get that useless piece of garbage.

Although I haven't tried this, according to this guy, he even sent a brick to one of those deserving corporations.  http://officeofstrategicinfluence.com/bulkmailer/

Don't you just love it!  Makes me feel warm all over.  Well, have fun.  By the way, we'd love you to visit Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.  From our incredibly conveninet downtown location, you'll easily find all the interesting historic Taos Plaza sights to see and explore.  With our awesome team of front desk associates, it's almost like having your own "tour guides".  We are not the fanciest hotel in Taos but we have a huge group of satisfied Guests returning and referring us to their family and friends.

Taos County Chamber of Commerce Networking Meeting

Sorry I didn't post this for Taosenos who are not members to learn about the networking session before hand and possibly join the Chamber.  Met several folks for the first time which is easy for me since I don't make all the meetings.  Talked mostly about building the social network connections with the intent of increasing sales.

If you are a Taoseno and not a Chamber member, pleae consider joining.  They work with many varied groups in hopes of improving the Taos economy.

If one of our non Taos readers, the Chamber web site is loaded with information and links.  We always hope you'll stay with us but more importantly, visit and stay in Taos soon!

http://www.taoschamber.com/index.html

During the first quarter of 2010, Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza set a record (for us).  We had zero turnover amongst our service oriented team of Associates.  The hospitality biz is notorious for high turnover and we've done that for 35 years.  The team we have at this point may be the best we've employed in those 35 years.  Thanks to each Associate.

What that means to Guests is that we should be able to provide you with very good service from your first call to your check out point.  We strive to meet your needs and improve your visit to the Taos area.  Although we do have the property on the for sale market, it is our intent to operate as if we will remain owners for years to come and hence want to gain your confidence to return and refer us to anyone heading this direction.

As usual, we invite you to follow this blog.  Have a video of the Taos area you'd like to share, post the link or send it to me.  Proud of a landscape or activity photo and want to spread it around, post a link or send one to me.  We are intent upon building this social network in 2010 to drive mucho biz our way.

Commercial and Contractors Welcome

A hotel is a home away from home for contractors and commercial Guests.  Perhaps a hotel is a bit like the old metaphor that says eat where there's a bunch of trucks.  You'll find good and reasonable food there.  We had a group of workers who'll be remodeling a major local facility stop by and ask about rooms and rates yesterday.

Their comments were along the lines of:
"where we are now staying, the rooms are junk"
"your rates are about the same"
"your rooms are far cleaner and more comfortable"
"we'll be back next week, Monday thru Thursday"

We are by no means the highest quality and priced hotel in Taos.  Far from it.  We are a solid mid range property with a number of extras that place us closer to the top of the mid market segment.  Our stated purpose is to provide far better service than we charge for.  You'll find our team of Associates amongst the most Guest service oriented at any property in Taos.

I ask each reader to take the time to let us know what you need.  What you look for in a hotel.  What your expectations are.  What things you want to do when in Taos.  Please leave those comments here on our blog, or on my facebook page, or the hotels twitter page.  I'll try to answer your questions accurately and honestly.  We also welcome and ask you to follow us on twitter, friend us on facebook, connect on linkedin.  You are invited to email your questions if you'd prefer.

Time to reserve for Memorial Day weekend.  Lowest rates of the year for 3 day packages last until early May, as low as $99 for a single for 3 nights.  That is a smoking deal!

Perhaps Best Value in Taos RE...Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza

As readers may recall, after 35 years, we've decided to work towards moving on.  In order to spur that effort, we've reduced the list price of the hotel to $2,150,000.  We will include the entire tract of land, not just the improved portion.  That's 3.3 acres of prime downtown Taos property with over 28,000 SF of improvements and about an acre of excess buildable land.  The bank did an appraisal November of 2009.  We are more than 20% BELOW that appraisal.  At $36,000 per key, that may well be the lowest lodging price in Taos!  Get your family, friends, associates together and let's do a deal!

We still seek your Guest referrals too.  Those referrals have helped us exceed last years sales by significant increases so far this year.  Our associates know of the properties listing and look forward to working with the next operator.

State Parks of the Moreno Valley

Although mspring brings mucho muddo to most mountian areas, the drying suns of summer will soon be with us.  If you like venturing off road, may we suggest you wait a month or so.  April is the time to see and do the more easily accessed places.

Did you know New mexico is home to the ONLY state park in the country honoring Viet Nam Veterans?  Viet Nam Veterans Memorial State Park's visitor center remodel is fast approaching completion.  The David Westfall Veterans Foundation Gift Shop should be open aboutr May 1, 2010.  With the state's budget crunch, donation to the Memorial will go far towards enhancing the new visitor Guest experience.  Looks like they'll be open mid May 2010 for the run for the wall.  A full openning looks likely for the Memorial Day Weekend festivities.

They already have 3 planned activities over the next few months.  First, the Run for the wall on May 21, 2010.  Second, Memorial Day Weekend events.  Next, on June 12, 2010, the Star Party.  Memorial Day Weekend is always a huge event for the Enchanted Circle with the Red River Run motorcycle rally.  Thsoe activities fill Northern NM.  Make your reservation soon!  More ifnormation at http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/VietnamVets.htm

Eagle Nest Lake State Park had a bountiful winter.  Ice fishing was epic and is now closed due to softening and thinnning ice.  More information at their web site: http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/EaglesNest.htm

Does More or Less Government = Liberty?

Our founding fathers created something that has provided immense opportunity for virtually anyone who honestly desires to get ahead.  They had clear concerns of government getting too big.  Have you recently thought about what liberty means?  Does the lame street media report factual news or opinion?

Here's a web site that offers strong opinions from a wide variety of authors on Liberty: http://www.libertypen.com/LibertyPen.html

If you'll go to the "Plain Truth" link, you'll find a number of very interesting short video clips.  Near the lower left of that page is one from Milton Friedman, an incredible economist.  He's talking about social security.  The clip was done many years back.  That commentary is of real relevance considering that the costs of social security this year, 2010, will begin to exceed the taxes collected therefor.  Especially of note is the last minute of his video in which he talks about socialized healthcare.

Dr. Friendman had a number of almost radical ideas but could convince you of the validity of those concepts, even if you disagreed with them.  He was for legalizing drups inorder to control and tax them.  He was also a fair trader in that he believed the benefits of less expensive imports were larger than the detriments.

If you have concerns about your personal liberty, invest some time researching web sites that offer a wide variety of thought on the subject.  Hope you'll visit Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza sometime this year.  We really appreciate your patronage and will bribe you with the best rates available anywhere in Taos.
