Note, they begin Friday at noon and continue thru Sunday at 7 PM. The Taos area offers much to see and do even though the forest service is mostly off limits (with exceptions). Plan to arrive Thursday and depart Monday. Make it a mini vacation.

As some may know, we and Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza are supporters of the Lobo Ski team primarily and the Lobo Club in general. As a result of that, we have available 4 men's BB tickets for the Lobos vs. TCU January 26, 2011 at 8 PM.

How am I going to make the best use of them? I'll do the following first come, first served. Only have 4 tickets so only 2 people will qualify. Book or donate early and contact me fast.

First, I'll give two tickets to the first person who directly books and prepays at least 3 nights lodging at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. You'll have to send me the confirmation number and the name on the reservation so I can confirm the transaction. Make certain you ask the front desk person you make the reservation with that you hope to be fast enough to get a pair of BB tickets. Might even ask them to call me and get you on the list. Not good with other specials, promotions, etc.

Second, I'll give two tickets to the first person who donates $200 to March of Dimes thru me. I'm my block volunteer and will gladly add you to my list! Donations need to be sent to me to organize counting on my block list.

SOMOS, Society of the Muse of the Southwest, is a local charitable organization that encourages writers of all sorts of material from poetry to books and everything in between. They have an extensive list of programs for January and February (along with the rest of the year). They are tenants in our retail shops at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. I encourage you to attend any of their presentations and support their efforts at encouraging folks to develope their writing skills and abilities. It's a Cold Day in Taos and more!

Just returned from a quick trip to Taos. First want to thank Quality NM for a good job on their Strategic Plannign seminar. BTW, if you're planning a ski trip, be prepared! It's cold on the hills around and in Taos. Layers are the word! Warm up gear available at Adventure Ski Shops store at Indian Hills Inn along with ski and board rentals.

A couple of upcoming new food and drinkeries are coming to the downtown area. One with an outdoor patio available (not important with this weather) and the other a brew pub. More later. Both within walking distance of Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza.

Many thanks to everyone who's called and bought Sipapu lift tickets to get FREE and MASSIVELY discounted rooms. And for your referrals of family and friends. For some dates, we may have trouble meeting your lodging needs. We are also going to add the $20 surcharge for Spring Break dates. Will post details in the next couple days.

Taos Ski Week Specials

Sometimes people think "specials" mean value. If you haven't already figured it out, that is not necessarily nor always accurate.

The reason I say that is because I just got an email from some of the hotels in Taos Ski Valley. They are pushing their "free" ski week package. NONE of their web sites actually post the special package pricing nor inclusions.

BUT, just using their posted January 2011 rates, if you are seeking value, you'll do far better with booking your room at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. At the valley chamber website, 7 properties are offering the "special". Some properties are right in TSV, others are located in or near the town of Taos. Prices range from a low of $900 to highs ranging from $1533 and far up the scale.. Lift tickets are NOT included with the packages. The Taos Ski Valley Ski Week for 2 Guests is included. So they are offering from $119 to $219 per night for rate.

Here's why Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza may be the choice for you. For our nightly lodging for 2 Guests, we'll charge you $274 for a week. That's $39.14 per night...for 2 of you! Add to that the cost of the Taos Ski Week program at $99 per person for the 6 day school, that's $14.14 per day per person or $67.43 per day for 2. That equals $471.98 for an equal package for 2 for the week! In other words, Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza is just about half the cost of any of the other "package deals" offered.

What can we say? We almost always offer Taos Best Lodging Values. Period! End of story. If you can't fit this exceptional ski week in your schedule, we ask you to share with anyone else who might be able to organize their schedule to get off for the most incredible ski week they've ever enjoyed. Quite an amazing season. Hope you were able to fully enjoy and experience the Christmas Day celebrations with family and/or friends.

Winter so far in Taos has ben mostly in the high 40's and low 50's temp wise. If you visit to ski, hike, or bike, bring sunscreen! If you're here to wander the historic and cultural places, layer your clothing. Nights are chilly but days have been very nice! We are low on snow but the skiers have been reporting mucho fun anyway. Looks like another storm later this week. May I ask, pray for snow, dance for snow, do whatever it takes to encourage a major dump!

Painting Taos by KNME shows today plus TCA movies

For anyone who can watch KNME, they are now showing Painting Taos. It is the story of how 6 artists arrived in the Taos area around 1900. Due to the scenery, light, and circumstances, they planted their roots in Taos. That turned Taos ito a world famou art community. The show will repeat at 5:30 PM Sunday, December 26, 2010. California Flood Storm Drops Some Fresh Snow

Guess we shouldn't complain about the minimal fresh snow left by the CA flood maker. Angel Fire reports 7" of much needed fresh snow. Sipapu welcomes the 2" as does Taos. Most areas have saved some runs for openning over the holidays so skiing is happening now around Northern NM.

You can always get the best rates we offer by calling direct to Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza. Mention our Sipapu Special for rates as low as $80 single. That is the lowest rate we offer during this Christmas week.

Don't forget that many local Taos merchants are offering a sales tax free holiday thru January 1, 2011. That means a savings of at least 8% off everything in participating stores.

Skiing at Sipapu Graded A+

We skied at Sipapu yesterday. Talked to half a dozen Guests. Every one was very impressed with the snow, the people, the value, the entire experience. Many of those we talked to had already skied either Angel Fire, Taos, or Red River. Every one of them thought their day at Sipapu was the best of the bunch.

Virtually all the people we talked with thought Sipapu was by far the best value they'd seen on this ski trip. People were staying at Angel Fire and Taos. All thought it was worth the drive over to Sipapu!

Everyone liked the family friendly attitude. A couple commented about how there was no arogance shown towards beginner or poor skiers. Reasonably priced equipment rentals and food were also appreciated. No crowds was also a liked feature. Peak days will certainly be more crowded but every ski area around will suffer from that circumstance.

Snow, although could always use more, was pretty darn good. They've done a good job of making and grooming. By mid afternoon, quite spring like, especially at the base of the area. Temp in the high 30's most of the day.

Son's family with a 6 and 8 year old first timers were in our care. The kids took first timer lessons and both managted to make one run top to bottom. Required lot's of Dad's help but got it done. Congrats to Shelby and Brandee!

We are now open for offering the Taos lodging partner program with Sipapu. When you buy your lift from Indian Hills Inn for Sipapu, you'll get free lodging! $39 for a lift ticket includes a room. Double occupancy required on weekends and peak days. Two nights required for singles during the week. Not available 12/26 thru 1/1. One more ski observation. If you can organize a several day ski trip, plan at least 4 days for skiing. If you are the most common skier type, you make a 2 day ski weekend. If you are frustrated by your ski improvement, you are very typical. Skiing for at least 4 days, add a couple of lessons, will alomost guarantee improvement. In addition to taking a lesson or two during those 4+ days, stop once in a while as you progress down the mountain and watch whichever skier you think looks best. If you come across a ski lesson, follow along for part of your run. Listen, watch, practice. What are they doing? What is their stance? How do the use their poles? Which way do they lean? How do they use the ski edges? Then try to replicate how they are skiing. You do that for at least 4 days and you will transform your ski ability.

Another storm is approaching NM. Let's hope it delivers at least another foot or two! (I'm an optimist!)

Writing the blog from Taos this AM. Cooler and very cludy. News shows snow showers all over North half of NM. Forecast is for 6" or more in the Northern NM Mountains and ski resorts. Pray for MORE!!! The season has been very dry so far so this storm is important for all area ski resorts.

TCA offers The Met Live in HD over the next 5 months. They are offering about half a dozen shows beamed by satellite to TCA. Go to http://www.tcataos.org/ for details of what and when. Most of us won't get to NY to see these awesome shows. Just another great reason to add Taos to your travel plans in 2011. It's even less likely most of us will travel to London for their theater activities. December Events Continue in Taos

First, may I ask everyone to do their snow dance. NM is experiencing a drought. Taos and Sipapu are opn with somewhat limited terrain. Frankly, our weather has been so good I'd suggest bringing your bicycles along and enjoying a ride or two. Or bring the hiking boots and experince so of our great trails along the Rio Grande Gorge or in the foothills close to Town.

Friday, December 10, 2010 is the Kit Carson Road Yuletide Party with refreshments and drawings at the shops and galleries along Kit Carson. That includes Lenny Fosters new location at 107 Kit Carson. Those folks will welcome visitors throughout December.

Saturday, December 11, 2010 the Lighting of Ledoux Street occurs along with the grand openning of The Harwood Museum.

Sunday, December 12, 2010 is a fundraiser for a long time local Fenny Lipscomb at KTAO Solar Center from 4 to 8 PM.Many local musician favorites are performing. Harwood Museum Grand Openning and Taos Chamber Music Group

Harwood Museum is hosting a community open house on Saturday, December 11, 2010. Ribbon cutting at noon with a full day of activities and events. After 10 years of planning and constrcution, UNM's Harwood Museum of Art celebrates openning it's new 10,700 square foot expansion. Grahams Grill is contributing it's delicious creative fare.

The Harwood is in it's 86th year. It is the 2nd oldest museum in New Mexico. One of the key geatures of the addition is a state of the art 130 seat auditorium. Care and storage of the museums 3,000 objects and 17,000 photographs are the focus of the lower levels of the expansion.

New Carpet Being Installed at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza

First, one of our most common complaints is about to be fixed. In spite of vacuuming, spotting, and shampooing, as carpet ages, it's appearance works towards looking unclean and old. Might be clean as a whistle but perception is what the Guest sees.

SW Renovations is removing and installing new carpet for us this week. Everyone around the hotel is excited about the changes. The front desk team are looking forward to Guests who'll be more comfortable wandering around in their bare feet. We will start replacing draperies for the next mini project. We were able to get only 9 rolls which means there amy be a couple rooms left undone. Those will be a little less costly and were selected because they were the cleanest and least aged.

The phone problem I mentioned earlier this week is fixed via a new front desk console. Actually took two of them to finish the job. First one from CMP apparently hadn't been adequately tested as the micro phone end of the handset didn't work properly.

The other good news item relates to one of our tenants in the adjacent retail rental building. Adventure Sports is the winter half of space A. Los Rios River Rafting is the summer half. Adventure is open a few hours each day for ski rentals and other ski goods. They are offering Guests at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza $5 OFF all of their adult ski and board packages. If you rent a package of skis, boots, poles for $25, it'll be $20. Just tell them you're a Guest at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza and away you go!

Another area of special is we are partnering with Sipapu Resort again this year. Buy your lift ticket for Sipapu from us for $39 + tax and your lodging is free with some limits. Two night stays required for some. Double occupancy required for sokme periods. Not available Chirstmas week. All the details will be finished by tommorrow, Friday, December 3, 2010. BTW, that is the one of if not the LOWEST lift ticket in the USA. Free lodging is unbelievable! That too is the best value in the USA for skiers.

TCA's Holiday Concert is this Saturday, December 4, 2010, 7 PM at TCA and features Robert Mirabal. Robert is a two time Grammy winning musician. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the TCA office 575-758-2052. As is our custom, we'll discount your already ridiculously low room rate if you go to the concert. Bring 1 concert ticket to the desk and we'll credit 50% or $10 towards your room charges. No other specials or coupons apply.

Sipapu Opens This Saturday -- Resort to Unveil 'What's New' for 2010/2011 -- For New Mexico’s first ski weekend, Sipapu anticipates opening Lift #1, which provides top-to-bottom skiing and snowboarding, and Lift #2, which services the beginner trail. Congrats to the Couse Foundation. They've hired their first professional Executive Director. Gwendolyn Thompson arrived earlier this month to work her way into the Taos art community. Had a call earlier today from a Guest who needed to know about our WIFI. First, we have it via Qwest DSL. Works most of the time but there are days. Different from the big city hotels, ours is free, not an added $10-15 per day. How do they get away with that...high rooms rates...parking fees...WIFI fees? Our basic rates are usually amongst the most reasonable in Taos plus we thro in the free WIFI, parking, continental breakfast.

Another party asked about the various online booking systems and agencies. You know, the ones who advertise on TV all the time. Famous actors and such. Let me tell you bluntly, if you get a quote of $65 from one of those sites, call us direct, we will almost always be able to match that number. If we happen to be busy with rates a bit higher, we'll still try to meet any website you get rates from for us. We'll often be able to match other property quotes. It certainly makes it easier if you even have a copy to give us when you check in but we'll probably let that slip too. The real benefit for booking direct is accuracy and easy changes or cancellations. We'll cover all the details when you book (unless the numbers change), we'll always allow a 24 hour cancellation (unless you bought a super discounted non refundable prepaid rate direct from us), we don't charge any wee-wee fees (it's rate plus tax) like some of those online people do. Remember, there is NO FREE LUNCH. They buy a block of rooms from us, mark the rate up, add some service (wee-wee) fees, and sell it to you at something higher and with more restrictions than you calling us direct. BTW, that advice applies to every hotel you stay with, anywhere in the world. Do your research online, check out all the sites, then go to the hotel site directly and/or call the hotel direct. That also means try to get around the central reservations number. Direct means call the front desk or property front desk/reservations person.

Our single king deluxe rooms offer a small gas log heater/fireplace. Pretty romantic on a cold fall/winter night. The heater is a thermostatically controlled "wall heater" that has a glass front with manufactured logs. They are more efficient than a real fireplace and vastly cleaner for air quality. Hope you enjoy them.

Why do we triple sheet our beds? First, it looks much cleaner and neater than a pilled blanket. Second, it keeps the blankets cleaner. Third, we just think it is a more professional way of offering the room.

Our solar heated swimming pool is still open but will be closed soon. The sun is keeping it in the 70's but that will decline shortly. We usually close it around late September or early October.

Continental breakfast is a bit varied but usually includes bagels, toast, juice, coffee, tea, hot chocolate (seasonal), yogurt, hard boiled egg, oat meal (seasonal). We also try to have little gift bags with an assortment of give aways. Nothing fancy but always a little extra. We also offer single cup coffee in the rooms.

We currently offer an full lineup of cable TV chanels including HBO movies and specials. Our TVs are all 25 and 27" models with remotes (as long as the remotes don't gro legs).

Our office is open from 7 AM until 10 PM daily, year round. Late reservation arrivals use the night bell to rouse the night person. Our phone system allows Guests to call out 24 hours and to receive calls by instructing your family to call the hotel, then follow the instructions you've given them to ring your room. The phones also include voice mail and wake up / alarm clock features.

Taos Center for the Arts presents Native Cinema Showcase Taos screening of "Reel Injun". A number of famed hollywood actors participate in this entertaining look back at the portrayal of the North American Natives through a 100 years of movies. School has started for many school districts so traffic is a bit slower. Shorter waits, easier traffic, still loads to see and do in and around the Taos area. They're still river rafting althought the flow rate is lower and the thrill level is a bit more modest. A search of Taos will yield loads of things to see and do. Note: if those plans include back country driving, hiking, or biking, remember this is our monsoon season. Sudden downpours can change conditions quickly. Be like the boy scout motto - be prepared.

Rio Grande Lave Tube Spring Video

Although I generally know a little about a lot, this is the first I've heard of a lava tube spring anywhere let alone in the Rio Grande a bit North of Taos. The linked youtube video is partially a slide show - click the pause button in the early portions so as to be able to read the slide show written information. This is a spring with enough water flow to appear much like a gravel volvano. Really neat video! Thanks to Melody Romancito for finding this tidbit of Taos information.

You may want to print the map segment if a day of exploration is in your plans. If you include that trip, be careful, hike prepared, make certain you are prepared for what you embark upon. They also mention other lava tube caves near San Antonio Mountain which also offers an interesting day trip for hiking and exploration.

In other words, here's a couple of other reasons to make your stay in Taos more than just a night or two. As you search and seek, you'll find that a full week may not be enough to really get to know your earth, your New Mexico, and your Taos area!

Short Service Problem to Report

One of our hot water boilers decided that yesterday in the middle of the busy season was the day to fail. Plumber is searching for the necessary parts to repair. They will not be available in Taos so cold showers are the order of the day. We will move Guests and reservations to the other building and accommodate you as best we can. Lobo NBA Player J. R. Giddens hosts Youth BB Camp

Former Lobo BB star, J. R. Giddens, is hosting a BB camp for young players from July 26 thru July 29 at Sandia High School in Albuquerque. All skill levels are invited including beginners. Individual instruction from J. R. and other NBA players is included. Camp runs from 9 AM until 3 PM daily and is for ages 5 to 18. Cost is $160 and the web site is: https://coopcamps.com/giddens.php

J. R. was a first round draftee in 2008 going as the 30th pick. Playing first for the Celtics and then traded to the NY Knicks. He is hoping to return for the upcoming season.

Danny Grainger also hosted a BB camp in Albuquerque earlier in July. He too isd a former Lobo BB star, now playing with the Indiana Pacers and putting up some impressive numbers.

Kenny Thomas, also a former Lobo star player also hosted a BB camp earlier in July in Albuquerque. It is gratifying to see these men continuing their involvement with New Mexico youth sports after their tremendous careers as Lobos. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR Continues Despite Fire

As you may have guessed, we're strong supporters of the Cumbres & Toltec. We encourage just about every Guest to take a ride on the Cumbres.

Unfortunately, they recently experienced a fire on a 100+ year old tressle that will at least need major repairs if not complete replacement. Origin of the fire is unknown. The end result is they need all the help we can give.

My personal request and suggestion is that you come up to Northern NM for a couple days extra this year. While here, take a day and ride the Cumbres. My favorite ride is unavailable due to the tressle portion of the run out of Chama being unavailable but ANY of the choices are exceptionally beautiful and the entire experience is just amazing.

Remember, you're riding a 120 year old rolling, operating steam powered museum! Got kids? Grandkids? Imagine the looks on their faces as the antique steam engine huffs and puffs it's way up and over 10,000 foot Cumbres Pass. This is an experience you can't get anywhere else!

TCA July - August Activities and lodging specials

Today, Friday, July 23, 2010, 6:30 PM at Taos Community Auditorium, the Jillana Ballet School performs. The school is an intensive summer program fashioned towards young pre-professional dancers. Tickets are $10 and available at the box office at 575-758-2052, at the door, and at FX 18 Gifts & Jewelry on Bent Street in downtown Taos.

Missoula Children's Theater returns to Taos in August. They are auditioning for King Arthur's Quest on Monday, August 2, 2010 at TCA. Audition will last 2 hours from 9 to 11 AM. Some cast members will be asked to stay for rehearsal immediately after the audition. Students entering 1st thru 12 grades are encouraged to attend. Rehearsals occur throughout the week from 9 AM to 1 PM daily. Perfromances are Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 3 and 7 PM. Cost is free. Up to 60 children will be cast. Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza will offer out of town participants a special weekly lodging rate of $354 for 2, $389 for 3, and $424 for 4 Guests for that week.

Great Team of Associates at Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza

May I brag a little on our team?

Our accountant (wife) just came in and commented that she wans't certain how to complete the end of quarter tax reports with NO employee turnover. You see, 2 years ago, we took over the day to day management from over 30 years of on site resident management. Over those more than 30 years, we've probably employed more than 1,500 different people. Mind you, that's for about 12 to 15 positions. That means HUGE turnover. Several hundred percent was normal. We always wondered and inquired but the managers always blamed it on "Taos" or the "industry". When talking with other lodging operators around the country, the turnover sounded normal.

Turns out, that turnover is not necessary. Not just normal. Last year, our turnover rate dropped massively but we were still seeking the last few keys to smoother and better operations. So far this year, 6 months, we've had 1 true employee change (they quit) and 2 who may have to due to health issues (we still hope for the best, their return). We've had a couple folks for two full years. Many of the rest for more than 1 year.

While reading a Facebook post recently, I thought about our team. The post was talking about drama. Prior to our taking over, it seemed like there was always some sort of drama surrounding our employees and business. I've never been a drama queen so instituted my policy of leave your drama at home. Even on the busiest of weekends, the hotel is generally drama free, everyone scheduled shows up, not often we have conflicts amongst the team.

It's a bit like the difference between the Lakers (69.5% W) and New Jersey (14% W). Not certain we qualify as a well oiled machine just yet but this group of people is likely the best team we've experienced in 35 years. For that, I have to brag to you and thank each of them. I hope they are making your experience with Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza a more positive one from your first phone call to make a reservation to the last thank you as you depart. From our perspective, there are far fewer errors, problems, Guest complaints, etc. Thanks to each team member! Thanks for your business.

First, our apologies to those Guests inconvenienced by recent electrical problems experienced in part of our rooms. Our power supplier is Kit Carson Electric Co-op. They supply us with power via a 3 phase system in which power enters the hotel on three different supply legs (wires). Seems they've blown fuses a couple times over the last few weeks. Last wee, they we awefully slow in responding to our initial call for service. Thanks so much for your patience and understanding.

10 Destinations NOT to Visit, Does NM Make the Cut? Did Taos Make the Cut?

In AOL Travel, Cahterine Price, author of 101 Places Not to See Before You Die picks her to most overhyped tourist traps ever. One of her choices is Four Corners. It's the only place in the USA where four states meet in a single point. Located in far NW New Mexico (the other 3 states refer to it a little differently), we visitied last year and it is honestly under whelming from a vista perspective. Nothing like the Taos area. The other problem is that the monument is now thought to be mislocated by about 2.5 miles according to an MSNBC report in 2009.

Whoops, those media reports in 2009 were wwwwwwwrong. Doesn't surprise you does it. A basic tenet of boundary surveying is that once a monument has been established and accepted by the parties involved (in the case of the Four Corners monument, the parties were the four territories and the U.S. Congress), the location of the physical monument is the ultimate authority in delineating a boundary. Issues of legality trump scientific details, and the intended location of the point becomes secondary information. In surveying, monuments rule! In other words, it is 100% exactly what and where it is supposed to be.

The end result of Prices opinion is that you'd be better off spending your time enjoying the MANY other scenic spots of the area. So, it would seem that Taos and New Mexico do make the cut but just in all the other parts of the state and Taos area that offer exquisite tourist sites to see.

On Saturday, July 10, 2010, Taos Pueblo also celebrates the 40th anniversary of the return of sacred Blue Lake to the Pueblo. This celebration will occur at the 1 PM Grand Entry at the Pow Wow. Although it will take about a month to repair, the train continues to operate from Antonito to Cumbres pass and back. First, although out of season, I am proud to know that one of the fastest skiers in the world resides and works right here in little old Taos. Ross Anderson is the Marketing Manager at Taos Mountain Casino. He also lays claim to a number of world speed skiing accomplishments. His definition of cruising is a bit higher than mine. Solar Heated Pool is Green, Environmentally, Not Algae Wise

One of our little steps towards environmental friendliness is our swimming pool heating system. The pool people, New Mexico Pools, were put to the test when they tried to convince me that solar was adequate. I'd tried that two times before about 15 or 20 years back. Technology hadn't arrived at the point of success back then. Never-the-less, I was convinced. We, somewhat worriedly, went with 100% solar = NO gas fired heater. That's the part I'm talking about being "green". Water is clear as a bell!

Now mind you, with today's natural gas rates, it would likely cost $700, maybe $1,000 a month to heat the pool with nat gas. Pool was 84 degrees today, all solar heat. Unless we have many cloudy days in a row, that is the typical temperature thru the end of August. September, it starts to decline a little.

Today, we had at least a dozen people in and out of the pool by 5 PM. Lots of laughing, splashing, relaxing, and swimming. Air temp was in the mid to upper 80's today in Taos. Scattered overcast part of the day, even sprinkled for about 5 minutes.

Another environmental effort we made this year was to reduce our use of chemical fertilizers and perhaps get by with a little less water for our huge, acre plus grassed central park and courtyard. We ordered a couple loads of composted sterilized mushrooms. Unbelievable! Greener than ever before with the first watering. Most thin areas filled in rapidly. Had the same experience at home with a much smaller area of grass. More work for me I might add. Thanks to our trusty maintenance team for spreading about 15 cu yards of the mushrooms. The grass looks absolutely great!

Harwood Museum is a Blue Star Museum

The Harwood has a number of Exhibitions this summer around the theme "Return to Sacred Places". Of note is a lnadmark piece "Winter Funeral" by Victor Higgins along with other work by the original eight artists of the Taos art community.

Another exhibition includes Taos Pueblo Photographs. The Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has provided many photos over the years. This collection has been accumulated over twenty years and includes a number of rare and old works.

Gene Kloss From Berkley to Taos is an exhibit of Ms. Kloss' life long print making endeavors. The largest body of work was created in Taos after 1970.

"Sacred Navajo Sandpaintings: Rendered in Wool" is the fourth exhibit. Capturing the sand painting images in wool rugs is a spectacular show.

Harwood joins over 700 museums in all 50 states in participating in the Blue Star Museum program. The program offers free admission to all active military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Here's just one more activity fot eh Memorial Day weekend in and around Taos. This is THE place to see and purchase Native - made arts and crafts. Hours are 10 AM to 5 PM daily. Although featuring Taos Pueblo Artisans, other pueblo indians are invited to participate. The Taos Pueblo Art Center is located just North of downtown Taos on Veterans Highway, the main road into the Pueblo, the straight at the Allsups curve at the North end of Paseo del Pueblo.

A youth dance group contest is also planned. Open to children from 5 to 18 who are skilled at Pow Wow style dancing. A troupe of Aztec dancerswill perform at noon each day.

Speed Traps and Memorial Day Weekend

If anyone needs reminding, Memorial Day Weekend brings the police out in force! For those traveling early, be prepared. From Albuquerque to Taos and back, I saw at least 7 ot 8 police, 3 or 4 with lights a blazin. What I'm saying is watch your step carefully. I always suggest traveling with a radar detector. An inexpensive one is usually adequate. If you want to spend the big buck, that's good too. Remember, if it's not on, it doesn't work. :-)

The area around Pojoaque is always populated with numerous green stamp issuers. Saw 2 or 3 along there yesterday.

The other item that needs emphasis for those taking the road from ABQ, just North of ABQ is about 10 miles of freeway construction with reduced speed limits and double fines. Two tickets being written yesterday. There is also a long project just North of Pojoaque into Espanola. Both include reduced numbers of lanes in some places,reduced width of lanes, lane reallignments, speed reductions.

Nothing ruins a weekend more than an unexpected and expensive ticket. Saving 1 ticket pays for a radar detector. If your using a GPS device, they are usually accurate at speed limits.

Remember, there are a lot of motorcycles on the roads of Northern NM this weekend. Please use caution and care. Every year either they or the 4 wheelers are absent crainial awareness and someone gets dumped.
Keep your eyes open! And your wheels down.

Solar Heating Pool Is Open + Balooning Article

First, our pool is open. Passed the state inspection today. Although the sun has been oft absent since we started the system a week ago. Hence, the temp is more along the lines of suited for Polar Bears. It was up to 67 but will climb 3-4 degrees per sunny day. We'll keep the solar cover on to build and retain and remove it if someone wants to take a dip.

Steve Winston is a travel writer who loves the Southwest and has written numerous articles for different publications. He too does a blog and write a great article about ballooning the Rio Grande Gorge. Taos Festival of Art & Architecture and Let's Play in the mud

What a wierd headline. But it does have a purpose. As a part of Return to Sacred Places, Taos 2010, the new Taos Festival of Art & Architecture offers visitors a glimpse into the sacred art and architecture that is part of what makes Taos such a magical experience. What about playing in the mud you say? A key event of the Festival is the annual re-plastering of the San Franciso de Assis Church in Ranchos. The church is famous due to the many paintings done by the public and world reknown artists such as Georgia O'Keefe and Ansel Adams. The church is known as one of the most painted and photographed churches in the world. Dur9ing 2009, Yahoo.com named the church among the "Top 10 things to see before you die".

Built in 1815 (that's 195 years ago for the math challenged), each year a fresh layer of plaster mixed with straw is added. Locals and visitors are invited to participate. Call the church office to get involved, 575-758-2754.

In an earlier post, we talked about the juried exhibition of paintings and photographs hanging at the Encore Gallery of the Taos Community Auditorium. That show runs now thru June 13, 2010. The aartist reception is Saturday May 22, 2010 from 2 to 5 PM. More information at http://www.tcataos.org/.

Saturday, May 29, 2010, the festival hosts two tours of "Four Valley Adobe Churches and Moradas". Larry Torres will conduct the tours as an expert in the field. Tours leave the town of Taos Town Hall at 10 AM and 2 PM. Only 26 seats are available for each tour so call 575-751-0647 for reservations. Tickets are $20.

Friday June 4, 2010 at 8 PM the Festival continues with "The Glory of Adobe" in the Encore Gallery at TCA. It's an evening of films, lectures, and a multimedia show. Addmission is $10. Call 575-758-2052 for details.

TCA Late May Activities Include Film and Moving People Dance Theater

TCA continues to bring both Taosenos and visitors interesting artistic experiences. Friday, May 21, 2010 at 7:30 PM TCA presents "Who Needs Sleep". This free event consists of a screening of the documentary film by Haskell Wexler followed by a discussion of the film with Wexler and nueroscientist Dr. James F. Pagel, a Taos resident. Doors open at 7:15 PM for this unique mixing of art and science. Since the show is free, we won't discount our already affordable lodging for those who attend.

Saturday, TCA hosts a reception for the artists, May 22, 2010, from 2 to 5 PM in the TCA of the juried show. Jurists sought "work that demonstrates skill and originality in the rendering and elicits strong emotional response to the subject." Works from over 20 area artists are on display from May 14 until June 13, 2010 in the TCA Encore Gallery.

Moving People Dance Theater present the 7th annual Dance Festival on two evenings. This festival displays contemporary dance from several dance experts. Cost is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and those under 21. We'll credit any Indian Hills Inn, Taos Plaza Guests with show tickets $10 off the cost of the room for one night.
